Original windows

We are moving into a property which needs quite a bit of work but the windows are single glazed and the person moving out has said the house is cold. Is there anything I can do in the short term to insulate them as much as possible? We are in a conservation area so can’t be anything to damage the windows but with a newborn I’m worried the house will be too cold.

Any experiences would be great.

You could get thermal blinds/curtains. Secondary glazing is effective but not very pretty. If money is no object, then just crank up the heating - you'll keep it warm but will run up silly bills.

cheap fix to windows is plastic glazing film. DIY sheds sell it as winter approaches, you may possibly findsome on clearance. It sticks best to fresh clean paint, notto flaking, eroded or rough surfaces.

If you have bare floorboards they will be draughty, unless you take them up (or have access from the cellar) and insulate between the joists.

Draughtstripping doors and windows gives the best return on investment, followed by loft insulation and CWI.

Double glazing is so expensive that it does not give a financial return, but you may as well have it if your windows are rotten and need replacing.

It would be useful to know how old the house is.
