It depends if you're talking about the city or the county? What type of place are you after and what's your budget? There's a recent thread that might get you started www.mumsnet.com/Talk/local/3595494-Relocating-to-Durham

Hi... I don’t mind a place in the country but close enough to a town for work and shopping! Ideally looking for a house but not much of a budget. Thanks for the thread that’s been a good help.

It's quite reasonable price wise and beautiful, can't advise on areas yet but I'm in very early discussions myself about a job there and have googled cottages, it's about £200k for what I would want, less than my proposed divorce settlement a plus

When you say 'not much of a budget' , what kind of ball park figure? The areas around Durham can probably accommodate most budgets to a degree but with huge variation.

Not more than 70k but cash! Not eligible for mortgage as been out of Uk too long! I’ve seen some nice houses within budget but would like to know more about the areas ie Ferryhill, Consett, Spennymoor etc

Does it have to be a house?
If I was buying again I’d buy a flat in newton Hall
I used to live in a flat in Newton Hall. We both miss it and wonder why we moved unfortunately. It’s within walking distance of the city, near a big retail park and has a bus go through every 10 mins

If you are wanting countryside have you thought about Weardale? Couple of towns pretty close, although depending on house type you want your budget may be pretty stretched...

I’ve been living in a flat for the past 20 years and have 2 cats now so would prefer a garden! But will check out flats in Newton Hall, perhaps if ground floor could have access to a garden!

Ah you’d think so but our first floor flat was the one which had the garden! I always thought it was a very strange design. In fact when I moved in I didn’t want a garden and the estate agent mistaking told me the garden was for the bottom flat. Which made a huge amount of sense considering my door opener next to his tiny gravel patch and his door opened onto the huge garden. And obvs his windows looked straight into our garden

Not Ferryhill. Consett and Spennymoor both have streets which are fine, and some not so much.
