Rain on windows

The rain on my window is so bad it's keeping me awake at night. The window is already double-glazed. I'm wondering if I need to go for secondary glazing - a bigger gap between the two panes. Also I've considered external shutters. A builder has recommended triple glazing with one layer of acoustic glass. Any advice much appreciated.

Hi @3LeggedCat, we're moving this thread over to our Property/DIY topic - we think that's a better place for it. Hopefully you'll have some answers before long. Smile

I wouldn’t go for external shutters, we’ve had them before and the rain tends to make an echoey noise on them. Have you got any idea why the rain is making so much noise on the window?

rain usually falls more or less vertically. Are you on an island, or a mountain?

Rain sends me to sleep along with windy chimney. I suppose all natural noises help keep me calm....
But my parents had to move house before due to the stream at the bottom of the garden making them want to piss 24/7.

I doubt triple glazing or laminated acoustic glazing would help that much as the sound of rain hitting glass is more of a impact sound which will transfer easier than distance sounds. Secondary would be your best best with results between 10db to 30db reduction depending on size of gap and how good your previous windows were.

But unless your window is a roof window or your costal/in a valley a standard window shouldn’t really get that much rain impact most of the time.

I’d 1st check your seals/vents and next check to see if your gutters aren’t leaking/blocked sending more powerful streams directly into your windows.

You can get acrylic diy secondary glazing quiet cheap which is about half as good as glass if you want to see if it would work...

Is it a roof window? I’ve only ever noticed rain noise on a sloping skylight.

If it’s a normal vertical window, does it fit well into the frame- I wonder if it’s rattling you are mostly hearing rather than the rain itself.

Thick curtains should help in any case

The house is at the top of a high hill in Wales, so it gets battered by the rain. @Squirreltamer Thank you for your suggestions - I'll check them out. @ChequersDog Thank you for the info about the shutters.
