How are Island cooker hoods ducted outside?

Just that really? Want extracted ones rather than recirculating. Do you need a false ceiling?

Ducting for the cooker hood can run between the joists of an existing ceiling if you are lucky and they run the right way (plasterboard would have to come down first of course so you’ll need a new ceiling!). If it’s a new extension you need to let your architect know ASAP that the cooker hood extraction is a priority. It may still not be possible but if it is a factor which needs consideration then the earlier the better.

I wouldn’t compromise ceiling height for a cooker hood though!

I am reaching the same conclusion @GertrudeSaysWhat. The ceiling is already on the lower side plus efficient extraction is a priority

Ours is going in a flat roof extension and the duct will go straight up and out through the roof with a little chimney hood on top.

If it’s an existing room then the real question is whether the joists run the right way ie front to back. How to tell: if you have floorboards in the room above then the joists will run opposite to the floorboards.

If your joists run the correct way then it will probably work out without needing a false ceiling (though you might need to use smaller ducting than is ideal). If not then you would need to have a false ceiling or a visible duct running across your ceiling (boxed in, or not if you like the very industrial look!)

We will have this issue but we are having a down draught extractor fitted into the worktop. Fairly pricy things but comparable to a designer hood thingy. The ducting will run under the floorboards and out the rear wall (we are raised up at the rear of the house)

I had a pop up extractor that circulated under the floor to outside, but I think it was put in when the extension was built so maybe a bit easier

How much space inside the cupboards do the downdraft extractors take?

Ours runs along the top of the kitchen cupboards and out through the outside wall about three feet from the cooker. Dh then made a bit of false wall, from cupboard to ceiling and wallpapered it like the rest of the kitchen, to hide the vent pipe.

Our downdraft extractor takes up one slim drawer in our island , we've a big island (3m) and have 8 other drawers so it doesn't affect our storage , we have the bora hob, the extractor is just s circular panel in the center, love it , so efficient and it's invisible , induction hob with inbuilt extractor was about €3,000 but we were extending so was easy to put in a pipe under the floor to draw the air away , worth every penny

Look at the Miele and AEG down draft extractors, both a similar price and both look good. We’re having one fitted soon, they’re much less unobtrusive than an extractor hood.
