If you describe a house you've viewed as "very tired"...

...what exactly do you mean...?

I've got my house on the market at the moment, not for the first time, so I thought I knew the ropes. I had it redecorated inside and out, neutral (F&B) colours, decluttered, all the odd jobs done, professionally cleaned top to bottom, you know the sort of thing. Got it as close as I thought was humanly possible to show home state, booked the dog into kennels and me away for a couple of weeks. (So no chance of it being messed up!)

Had a viewing and the feedback was "has everything we're looking for but very tired, needs completely redecorating and recarpeting to our taste, concrete dug out between flagstones (???), will think about it and let you know"

Now, I know you haven't to take these things personally, but I'm quite honestly baffled by this. I can sort of see the redecorating and recarpeting thing, as everyone likes to put their own mark on a place, I've just come back home, and been over the flagstones to look for these dug out bits, no sign, so I don't know what that's all about, but it's the "very tired" that I'm a tiny bit miffed about, if I'm honest. To me that says it's tatty and outdated, avocado bathroom and swirly carpet territory, but it's a world away from that...

Anyone got a grip to hand to me...?

I wouldn't take it personally. Maybe they like strong, bold colours and found your decoration a bit muted... Maybe they just didn't know what to say. Your house sounds lovely.

Closetlibrarian · 08/06/2019 22:02

They probably just didn't like it and couldn't think of any particular reason and came up with those when the agent pressed them.

QOD · 08/06/2019 22:04

Linky

LIZS · 08/06/2019 22:04

Were they young or ftb? Sounds like they have an unrealistic expectation and looking for either a bargain to do up or a new build.

Poppins2016 · 08/06/2019 22:05

I've just come back home, and been over the flagstones to look for these dug out bits, no sign, so I don't know what that's all about

The way I read the sentence, it sounded as though the potential buyers want to dig out the concrete (cement?)/re-grout the flagstones...

To be honest though, I'd assume the issue was one of the following:

Buyer is very fussy
Buyer has different taste
Buyer was giving a (bad) excuse

IzzyD83 · 08/06/2019 22:06

To me that would mean not up to date and needs a refresh in decor. But as u already know this...don't worry about it. You could get a few tins of magnolia and paint it all cream to give people a blank canvas for the ones that can't see past decor but if not I'm sure the right people will come along soon as it's coming up to a Vetter time of year to sell x

SoHotADragonRetired · 08/06/2019 22:07

I think you're overthinking it, people have weird tastes. Sounds like it might be an effort to soften you up for a low bid or maybe they have strange taste.

Or you can always post your listing here if you want some honest feedback... Sometimes layout/furniture/decor etc can look dated and "tired" even if clean and decluttered etc.

IzzyD83 · 08/06/2019 22:07

Better even

littlebillie · 08/06/2019 22:07

Don't take it personally likely looking to get price down

PenguinsRabbits · 08/06/2019 22:09

I wouldn't worry about it - had some very strange reasons given when selling flat, think sometimes people have seen a few and they all blur into one. Fairly normal to want to redecorate / recarpet throughout to your taste. Tired to me means dated, I wouldn't use that word but might think it if a kitchen or bathroom looked 20 years old.

Probably not interested but small chance looking for discount.

abbey44 · 08/06/2019 22:26

Izzy - that's the thing, most of the rooms are in a neutral cream colour anyway (F&B skimming stone, I think), apart from the central room (it's a barn conversion) that's in F&B blackened, a very pale duck-egg blue.

Here are the main rooms downstairs - you'll get a good idea of what the rest of the house is like, I hope...

Odd comment. I would think dated for tired. New bathroom and kitchen needed. Maybe internal doors - overall look a bit dull and depressing.

But that doesn’t sound like your place. Ignore them, if they want it they will offer, of not move on to the next viewers.

Dippypippy1980 · 08/06/2019 22:28

😂🤣😂 that’s not tired at all. It’s beautiful.

Perhaps they need a dictionary,

bilbodog · 08/06/2019 22:29

Sounds like they just dont like it so i wouldnt worry about it. The pictures look lovely. Wait and see what others say.

CarrieBlu · 08/06/2019 22:30

OP your house is lovely! Did the estate agents mix the feedback up with someone else’s house? I can’t imagine your house being described as tired by anyone!

BloomedAgain · 08/06/2019 22:32

I suspect they're priming you to accept a lower offer.

PodgeBod · 08/06/2019 22:32

Wow it is gorgeous, not tired at all! Don't people usually decorate when they buy a house anyway? It seems odd that they would expect it to be exactly to their taste.

gamerwidow · 08/06/2019 22:32

Tired means tatty and dated, I don't think that applies though.
I think feedback in these circumstances is always a bit pointless. If people don't like it it's usually personal to them rather than something you need to fix.

SoHotADragonRetired · 08/06/2019 22:33

I think they just don't like the style of the house.

And... Tbh, I can sort of see the tired thing? Sorry. It's very neat and clean and the decor is neutral, but you've got a bit of clashing styles/eras and the heavy beams sit weirdly with some of the more modern furniture, to my eye.

But it is what it is so shrug it off.

TyrionsNextWife · 08/06/2019 22:33

You’re house looks beautiful, and they sound like dickheads Grin
Maybe they’re laying the groundwork for a cheeky offer and want you to think you won’t get much interest.

LittleLongDog · 08/06/2019 22:33

What do the bedroom/s and bathroom/s look like?

squee123 · 08/06/2019 22:33

I think it is beautiful amd very classic, but I guess if you liked really modern decor you may describe more classic decor as tired/dated perhaps.

GeorgeTheFirst · 08/06/2019 22:33

That will sell!

It's not tired.

MrsBobDylan · 08/06/2019 22:34

Good grief, they are either barmy or planning to put in a low offer.

There is nothing tired about your house, it is immaculate and beautiful.

SinkGirl · 08/06/2019 22:34

Crikey, it’s gorgeous! They’re insane.

I’ll be honest and say that your furniture is not to my tastes (nothing wrong with it but not what I’d choose) so I have to look past that and imagine it with my own stuff, but I have no problem with that. Some people just have no vision!
