How can I make my fireplace white again?

My fireplace has yellowed massively over the last few years. It looks silly now as the room has all white furniture.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to restore it? I'd rather replace it, but it was custom made to fit and would cost a lot to replace. It's MDF, and the top is shiny almost.

Would it be possible to paint it? With kitchen cupboard paint perhaps. I think you can get pots or sprays.

Yeah paint it OP.
Eggshell will give a nice, not too shiney, finish.

I've always stared at it, wondering if I could paint it. I'm just not convinced because of the finish of it. I feel like the paint wouldn't stick. It's not quite a lacquered finish, but not far off. 🤔

Sand it or use a primer first and it should be fine.

If replacing it is the last resort then paint it. If it goes wrong replace it.

Try a specialist roller for gloss/eggshell and a paint conditioner like owatrol oil or floetrol for water based. It makes all the difference.

Dh is always very 🙄 when the paint conditioner but he grudgingly admits it looks better.

Zinsser primer is fantastic. Expensive but it's always made the paint stick really well for us.

It didn't go too well. Air bubbles and drips galore from spray paint. It died and adhered quickly but despite being sprayed flat, it ran anyway.
How can I fix this? Can I get the spray paint off?

What did you sand and prime with?

wowfudge · 27/06/2019 23:50

Sand it down - work gently and evenly - prime if you haven't already and use a gloss roller and something like Rustoleum Furniture paint in satin finish. Spray paint can be very difficult to achieve an even finish with.
