Anyone know anything about gas central heating?

I'm not technical so bear with me..

We have a basic Potterton gas boiler. It's about 20 years old and never had any issues with it. The heating system in the house has just one zone so water and rads are heated at the same time. It's basically either on or off. There are just 5 rads in the house (2 bed).

We recently had a boiler service and safety check just as a precaution as I'm due to have a baby any day. Report came back saying all was fine, but since the check the 2 rads downstairs no longer get warm at all. I've bled all of them to check for airlocks. The upstairs 3 do warm up but much slower than before. Before the service/check all the radiators would get warm simultaneously. Now it's like first rad warms up..second rad..third rad...nothing.

I've contacted the gas company who did the service l and they have said nothing they did could have affected the system in this way. I don't know enough about it to argue but it seems like a coincidence to meSad

Has anyone experienced anything like this before, or may have an idea of how to rectify it?

Thanks!

The system was working fine prior to the service, which was about 3 weeks ago now.

It's not cost related especially, although I'd prefer to avoid a large cost if it's not necessary. I've lived here for 3 years and before that it was a rental property for a long time, so I doubt much time or money has gone into the place. I haven't done anything since buying as it all worked!

Tbh because it only stopped working after the service visit, I was hoping there was a simple solution as it didn't make sense to me why all of a sudden something had changed.

Anyway, I will look into get the valves replaced.

Yes, we are able to access the water tank in the loft.

I'd check the pump

Pavlouplumbers · 08/06/2019 08:18

Some old systems have a Seperate power switch for the pump. The gas engineer may have switched it off for safety while working and forgot to switch it on by mistake.

Hi @Pavlouplumbers

Where might the switch be located. Can't see anything obvious. The pump isn't in an easily accessible area as it's boxed in above the boiler

Do you see the cable coming from the pump? Follow that. It may go into a switch, or the wall or a wiring box. The pump may have failed all together though. It does look very old. The electric motor and electronics can only last so long. I can't see how anyone would break it though. When the heating is on you should be able to feel it vibrate. Careful though because it'll be hot. If it is vibrating then sometimes there's a dial on the pump that can be turned up. The engineer may have turned that down. If you can hear a buzzing from the pump that usually means it's broken.
