£6500 for south west to skim these rooms and ceilings, does that sound right?!

Plastering quote

Just asked my DH who is a very respected painter and decorator. He said "If you know the work of the plasterer and it's the best of the best, then it's a fair price"

But he said if you haven't seen the work he's previously done, then get more quotes.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 01/06/2019 05:13

Do you mean to do the whole flat?

I would ask for a best guess from the plasterer as to how long it's going to take and how much the materials will be costing and work it out from there. I would be happy to pay a skilled tradesman up to £300 plus VAT per day for labour only. excluding materials. Slightly more for an electrician or plumber.

WBWIFE · 01/06/2019 05:43

Materials are about £30. It's a bungalow but yea the whole bungalow.

Luckily my DH is a gas engineer and plumber. Hes only paid £180 a day Haha, he said he wishes he was paid £300 plus a day!

@HennyPennyHorror not seen his worm personally just photos. He said it would take 3 days to do a room and longer for a kitchen?! Last time we had plastering the booked charged about 300 an average size room 220 for small and he did a room a day roughly!

Materials for an entire flat is way more than 30 pounds OP. Also 2-3 days for a room plus ceiling is normal.

Phillipa12 · 01/06/2019 06:09

Is it just skimming? Or will old plaster have to be removed. Dont forget that they have to work round windows, and all light sockets etc have to be removed then put back, so yes a kitchen is really fiddly. Its also a very messy job, is the bungalow empty or will they have to work round furniture? I have just had 3 days of plastering completed, he did 3 walls in a bedroom, some old plaster needed removing and he had to do a window wall. Half a small hallway, and 2 window surrounds from having new windows fitted and half the plaster fell off the walls. In total it cost £900 and he had a labourer helping, i do have a 200 year old cottage though and i requested that all walls and edging stayed wonky as per the age of the house.

SherlockSays · 01/06/2019 06:23

I've just been quoted £1100 for just my living room, I'd say that was fair for a whole bungalow, especially if including difficult rooms like kitchen & bathroom.

WBWIFE · 01/06/2019 07:10

@HennyPennyHorror per room they said.

OP posts:
WBWIFE · 01/06/2019 07:11

@SherlockSays why are they classed as difficult rooms? The whole lot is completely ripped out and empty?

OP posts:
WBWIFE · 01/06/2019 07:12

@Phillipa12 the property is completely empty, kitchen and bathroom fully ripped out and all light switches and sockets already removed. Skirting removed so essentially completely bare wall and rooms

OP posts:
WBWIFE · 01/06/2019 07:12

And yes just skimming. The plaster underneath is old but solid

I would gets another quote to compare

JoJoSM2 · 01/06/2019 08:14

I would estimate it's about 7 full days of actual work. The materials cost very little. Personally, I'd shop around for a much lower quote.

TiddleTaddleTat · 01/06/2019 08:27

For comparison, I just had a quote just shy of £4K to plasterboard and skim my 3 bed semi (up north)
Plasterer said it would tame 18 days solo or 10 days with help.
I'm getting other quotes as I don't think it all needs ripping out and I dislike the look of plasterboard.

reigate1 · 01/06/2019 12:53

Hi, that sounds alot . I got my whole house plastered on two weeks. They did two rooms in one day. Look around for more quotes. Find a plaster not a builder who will send a plaster as he will keep the commission and that will cost you more. Try local plaster.

Manclife1 · 01/06/2019 12:59

On my own I could do a room a day and I’m not even a professional plasterer! Look at it this way, your being quoted £650 a room, I’d suggest £400 is much more realistic. That said if your in/near London all bets are off as it’s a free for all down there.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 01/06/2019 13:22

WBWIFE - in London your husband's labour would be charged out at at least £300.00 per day. And i he was self employed he could easily ask for that amount.

With all the further information you've put in all your later posts - yes, find someone else to quote.

JoJoSM2 · 01/06/2019 14:46

I'm in London and have never been charged 300/day.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 01/06/2019 20:38

@JoJoSM2 - can you pm me the number of your plasterer? Thanks.

JoJoSM2 · 01/06/2019 20:51

Bibbity, haven’t had any plastering done for a couple of years and can’t remember the details.

TitusP · 01/06/2019 20:51

We are SE, our house is about 3/4 the size of yours and we paid £4,000 for skimming all walls and ceilings.
