Removing internal wall

Someone sensible speak to me about removing an internal wall.

I’m utterly clueless.
My understanding is it would be best to organise a building permit, get a structural engineer and then a builder.

Is that right?
It’s a load bearing wall.
I’m in Scotland.
Talk to me about your experiences. Thanks all

Also in Scotland.

We removed a non load bearing wall so was fairly easy. We just knocked it down 😂

Sorry zero help there but we just got a builder that we knew personally to check it wasn't load bearing and just went for it.

If it's load bearing you will need a steel to support it, depending on the situation you may need building control (not usually) and your builder may wish to consult a structural engineer - circumstances differ but the longer gap the more likely to need an engineer to work out the load (then whether you need a single or double steel) small gaps a good builder may be able to do without this.

I know we’ll need a steel support.
I’m more asking about what order to do things in and who to get in touch with.

We did get in touch with a builder for a quote but he simply said he’d give us details of a structural engineer. He then got back in touch and told us to google a structural engineer. But I don’t know what they would expect us to do first.

Having tried this recently we contacted a recommended local structural engineer and they said they'd come and take a look. Price for them to do this was quoted at £250 + VAT. Builder did however come to view first and said he thought it was probably semi supporting. In the end we didn't go ahead.

Cool. Thanks all.
