Can you find me a house for £900K?

Calling all Rightmove enthusiasts! I hope you can help me find a home and an area that both DH and I can agree on.

We cannot afford to live in London and require a bigger house so that we can get an au pair as family on both sides are unfortunately not in a position to help us with the kids. My ideal location would be Edinburgh and surrounding areas, but husband won’t agree to this. He says it’s too cold up there.

Extended family live north and east, so relocating south or west of London not an option for us. We looked at Cambridge but we wouldn’t be able to get more for our money there.

Any ideas? Musts are a 4 bed, good sized garden and preferably a period style property, although I am open to ideas. Eldest is 5, so good school a must. Ideal would be to live in an area with good links to London as DH has the odd client meeting there. I’m a NHS worker and can find work wherever we may go......which only adds to the problem of where should this be?

Help!

Oops missed the jot south of London but the transport links to the North and East are fast and skip London.

That property in Hexham is beautiful! (posted by @Disfor) Lush place too - brilliant schools, gorgeous countryside and a strong feeling of community.

You could buy this and have way plenty left over. www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-59994555.html

Good links to Glasgow, not too far from Loch Lomond, lots of great outdoor stuff, nice village/small town. And it’s not really that cold!

fussychica · 29/05/2019 09:01

Bath or somewhere in Wilts/Somerset.

Grantham? Easy to London, good Grammar schools and non Grammar. Trainline direct to Scotland.

Lincoln does not have any grammar schools at all. There was an attempt to introduce them a few decades ago, but the local parents rebelled! So there is a good choice of comprehensives if that is your preference. Some kids get bussed to Market Rasen, Gainsborough, Grantham etc., if they choose to take the 11+, but it is not the norm.

Not sure how to link but try this area.

There's some lovely ones here op, loads more bedrooms well under your budget too. Some are right on top of the beach. And once the high speed train line comes in, less than an hour from London.

stucknoue · 29/05/2019 10:01

Market Harborough? 50 mins direct to London. That budget will buy a mansion. Villages to the north of mh are nice and with the spare money you can afford private school - Leicester grammar (confusingly not a grammar but a private school) or Oakham

Blossomgate · 29/05/2019 10:03

Ripon? (Depending on how often your DH needs to go to London...obviously too far if daily/weekly)

15 minute drive to an East coast mainline station (Thirsk) , just over two hours into KC.

Grammar school system, selection by 11+ passmark and distance from the school.
Www.ripongrammar.co.uk, is 'outstanding' comes with lots of history (1555) and a top rated school. Alternatively the secondary academy is also 'outstanding'.

And this house:

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-66737458.html

( kids could walk to school from here, about 20 mins)

Choice of local primary schools (St Wilfred's is 'outstanding', Holy Trinity and Ripon Cathedral primaries, 'good'. Smaller village schools Sharow is the closest, rated as 'good' and Dishforth CE a bit further a drive (10 mins) 'outstanding'.

Not sure what type of "period" property you'd like but here's a few Buckinghamshire/Oxfordshire options:

Penn Semi-detached with beams and a wishing well

Not quite sure what period this is but modern inside

Medmenham very pretty cottage

Gorgeous house in Henley

Wymondham
Wymondham College is very popular

Houses currently in catchment

Near Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital
Ok trip to London

It's funny that some of these look good, but when you know a place you immediately go, "Nah, no thanks." Those Winchester houses linked above look fine, but no. 1 is in an uninspiring village with a lot of imminent development, no. 2 is on a very busy main road and no. 3 is a modern development with gardens the size of a piece of toilet roll.

Outofinspiration · 29/05/2019 10:26

What about Hertfordshire? 900k will get you something pretty decent in the nicer areas.

BikeRunSki · 29/05/2019 10:32

Sheffield - links to London St Panc
Peak District - links to St Panc from Chesterfield
Wakefield (2hrs from LKX on ECML) and Doncaster (1 hr 45) would both get you mansions for your money.
Villages south of Huddersfield (HD8 area) -20/30 mins to Wakefield Westgate for LKX. Good schools, ok house prices, excellent area for commuting to several towns, lots going on for families.
