Whole house water filters? Anyone got one they recommend?

I live in London and have decided I can't take the limescale anymore. Having grown up in a soft water area I also know how much nicer my hair/skin look and how much nicer the drinking water is in a soft water area.

I think I need a point of entry whole house water filter... but I don't want a softener that uses salt... so what to get? Help! Anyone have any recommendations?

I live in London and have a softener. You can keep one tap unsoftened for drinking, although apart from babies and people on v low sodium diets the softened stuff is fine to drink.
I'd recommend the softener...no experience of how a filter would work for whole house though

I've had an ion exchange (not bad) in my last house, and a salt system in this one. Both in incredibly hard water areas. The salt is far and away the better system - it's a Twintec.

Ah ok, I'm considering the water softener now. Seems to have much better reviews than the salt free one. I've already requested a quote from Twintec, thank you for that!

It's also really, really easy to use - you don't have to do anything other than check whether you can see the indicator line, then top it up with the blocks, which are easier than loose salt. Hope it works for you - my skin and hair are WAY better - and no limescale anywhere, which is brilliant. All the best.

Hi mazy would you mind sharing which one you have? We are also looking for a softener. Hope you don't mind me jumping in, OP!

I’m not in London but in Southampton and the water here is very very hard. We had our 2 bathrooms done last year and after 1 year our taps was so bad, my kettle was bad and to be honest couldn’t take it anymore so we decided to have our water softeners done 3 weeks ago and to be honest to is great and I wished I could have done early. We also have the water fitter and that has been great than buying water bottles. The company that did mine is called Harvey water softeners if anyone wants to check them out.

Cecilia2016 · 29/05/2019 19:45

Yes no more lime scale in my house and I also have one with block of salt which is very easy too

SleepingPanda · 29/05/2019 19:54

I've just requested a quote from Harvey's too, thank you for the info. We're getting a new bathroom fitted soon amd I don't want limescale anywhere near it when it's done! Twintec are coming round next week to see if it's possible to install in my flat plus they do a demonstration Smile

I was looking at a Monarch Midi but my plumber has recommended Kinetico - the one they suggested was over £1200 to supply.

SleepingPanda · 29/05/2019 20:02

I'll look into this brand too, thank you. Twintec have quoted me around the same for a high flow softener plus £265 for installation. No idea about the ongoing salt costs yet though.

I had a kinetico in my last house and about to fit another in current house. Block salt so easy to fill. Salt costs are low....needed two blocks every 5-6 weeks which cost around £6. Main cost is supply and fit.

mazylou · 30/05/2019 10:16

@FiresideTreats, it's a TwinTecS3.

It was about £1200 for a straightforward install, however we have a complicated setup due to CRAZY plumbing and he had to do some extra work - I don't think it would apply in most cases. The salt blocks were £125 for 24 blocks (about a year's supply). We're in Dorset, the water is like a rock. What prompted it was redoing the bathrooms and not wanting to spend my entire life de-limescaling everything so that it looked good. This is our en suite, two years on:

2 years on! Wow! That’s fabulous!

FiresideTreats · 30/05/2019 19:07

Thank you!

That's the shining shower screen of my dreams!

Very beautiful and shine shower. We have the same taps and the lime scale was unbelievable and after the water softeners was installed and I finally said goodbye to the lime scales
