Has anyone had kitchen cupboards painted?

If so how did it work out long term?

I have a perfectly sound good quality but 25 year old kitchen. It seems a shame to replace something that is absolutely fine but just starting to look a bit tatty round the edges if it can be smartened up with some paint and maybe some new work surfaces.

I've seen loads of amazing looking transformations on local Facebook pages but I can't help thinking the effect might not be that long lasting, and if not if I would be better putting the money towards a new kitchen long term.

I am interested to see the responses. We are (hopefully moving soon and want to have the wardrobes sprayed. The guy I found says they 'will last as long as the wardrobes last', but I would like to hear from anyone who has actually had it done

Yes I painted my kitchen cupboards about 3 years ago.
My units are quite old. 1980/90's They had a horrible plastic grab bar, that orangey fake oak effect. I used plain white furniture paint and I used the base coat first (same product type). I only did the doors.
Had to touch up a few small bits on the grab bar where the paint had worn slightly, but overall they still look OK.
I was impressed by how realistic the finish looked when I first did them

That sounds good Flax

I wouldn't attempt to do it myself as I'm a bit slapdash and prone to starting things and not finishing it, but there are quite a few professionals offering the service locally with great reviews but I didn't know if the initially amazing transformation lasted beyond a few weeks/months until the paint started chipping.

When I moved into my house the kitchen cupboard doors were dark green. I couldn't afford to change the kitchen at the time and hated the colour so I painted them. I used melamine primer and then satin wood. I applied it with a gloss roller to avoid brush marks. 13 years later and I still haven't replaced the kitchen! Apart from a couple of small scratches which could easily be touched up it still looks fine.

The trend now seems to be to find a local garage that spray paints cars and take your doors down to them to respray.

Other option is to just replace the doors if the carcasses are fine. The only issue is if the kitchen is over a certain age the doors may have been measured in inches not mc's so may not fit. You could get them made. Just remember to keep your hinges etc.
