Laundry Closet?

We don't have enough space to have a proper utility room. So I'm thinking if a laundry closet can do the trick, I'd be more than happy.

But is laundry closet allowed in the UK? Or it's perceived as fire hazard some sort of?

Does anyone have something similar? Washing machine, dryer on top, plus a hanger bar for jackets and drawer for all cleaning stuff ...and the ironing board... All in one closet...

Probably too ambitious ?

My new kitchen has a cupboard for washer and condenser dryer. I need to leave the door open with dryer in use. Ironing board space is at the side but I don't have space for hanging racks

Yes, I do. Designed by architect as I also did not have room for a full utility room. It's totally fine, have had it about 4 years now and no issues with fire regulation that I am aware.

Dryers in general can be a fire hazard though, so do be careful (always clean out the lint drawer and switch off at plug when not in use). My cupboard has a window as well which I open because otherwise it does get very hot and steamy if the dryer is on.

I have a utility closet. Side by side washer/dryer and the boiler is above. It still means I have a laundry basket outside the closet cluttering up the kitchen.

It's a great idea. My friend has one with sliding doors, hers also has a sink.

If you can fit your laundry closet upstairs then you will be winning at life - it's a game changer!

Starrynights86 · 23/05/2019 22:35

Yup we have one. Dryer over the washing machine, and a small tub next to the washing machine with shelves above that. We have an extractor fan in it for when the dryer is on.

PlatypusPie · 23/05/2019 22:37

Next door neighbour has that - am contemplating it .....

womanhuman · 23/05/2019 22:40

Can you make room for a clothes horse or heated dryer too? What about a maiden hanging from ceiling?

Riverside2019 · 23/05/2019 22:54

womanhuman, no room for these, I'm afraid.

feliciabirthgiver, no room upstairs for this. We can't even have the full size bathroom upstairs, ending up with the family bathroom next to the kitchen downstairs.

yourestandingonmyneck, the only possibility is to have this closet outside downstairs the main bathroom, in connection with the lounge. I'd imagine we will have to accept the noise when machines are operating, if the closet doors have to be left open.

Blue5238, our kitchen will be too small to accommodate this. That's the very reason making me consider moving the washing machine elsewhere.

Ours is at the bottom of the stairs. Large unvented CH cylinder on the left, washing machine and tumble dryer stacked (fortunately could be vented straight to outside). Space for washing powder, stain removers etc but nothing else. Full size cupboard door on it. Makes it really quiet tbh.

minipie · 24/05/2019 09:21

We have this, it’s literally just big enough for the two machines stacked and a laundry basket on top. Laundry liquids go in a fabric shoe holder on the back of the door (was life changing when I got that!!). I have to stand in the hall to do laundry but it’s still so much better than having it in the kitchen.

Do try to get the dryer plumbed in so it doesn’t have to be a condensing one

Agree with suggestion of sheila maid rather than rail if you can.

JoJoSM2 · 24/05/2019 12:29

We had a similar set up. Not sure why you'd leave the doors open? We never did but we did have little vents put in them. It's a fab set up.

Peachi82 · 24/05/2019 17:41

I wanted to get one under the stairs, but was worried that the vibration of the machines get amplified by the wooden stairs.

Annasgirl · 25/05/2019 13:53

I have one in a cupboard in my kitchen and it is great but I am hoping to build one on the upstairs landing this summer as I am fed up running up and down the stairs with laundry. You need to keep the door open while the dryer runs otherwise you will get mould. Otherwise all fine for us. We've had it for 8 years.
