Hi all

Me and my other half currently live in bournemouth with a mortgage, we have been up to the Newcastle many times and love it up there.
We’ve been talking about selling down here as we would be able to move without a mortgage. We want a baby so he would work and I would just try to find something part time.
He’s a Cnc miller, can anyone tell me if there is a lot of this type of work in the Consett area? We have 2 cars so getting about isn’t a problem.

Any help is much appreciated

Thank you

No idea but the weather will definitely be different.

AnduinsGirl · 22/05/2019 22:21

Consett girl here! Afraid I can't help on the jobs front but any other Consett questions I am happy to answer! :) And yes, the weather is...something else!

butterflykiss00 · 22/05/2019 22:31

I'm from cpnsett too, if you look on indeed you would get a good idea, consett is an upcoming area with great value for money houses , I love it.

It is however always cold and gets the worst of the weather all the time ha

zigzagbetty · 22/05/2019 22:49

I'm from consett originally, countryside is great but agree it has it's own special micro climate Grin

Justkeeprollingalong · 22/05/2019 23:06

Does Consett still have red dust?

10Nichole · 23/05/2019 01:29

Hi all

Thank you for the reply’s....but there must be someone who knows about engineering jobs there? Or the surrounding areas?
We’ve never visited in the winter, can the weather get that bad?

Thanks

Sorry, dont know much about jobs but there are easy links to Newcastle etc and there are loads of industrial estates in the area. Had a quick search and there are quite a few related jobs online in the area.
You will get snow in winter (and possibly autumn and spring!) but life generally carries on. Snow tires are your friend! The area is gorgeous and there are some lovely villages around consett. My mum emigrated to Devon from there and our sledges have hung in the garage ever since.

Bunnybigears · 23/05/2019 07:38

Regarding engineering jobs gonon indeed.com and search for cnc Miller jobs in the area that should tell you what you need to know. Sunderland hs Rolls Royce who employ cnc millers but it depends how far he wants to commute.

Disfordarkchocolate · 23/05/2019 07:43

I wouldn't say the weather is that bad but it won't be like Bournemouth. You will have a winter and more snow than the surrounding areas. I used to live nearby and you could see who had driven in from Consett in the staff carpark as they had snow on the car. Plenty of positives, especially affordable housing.

Upsydaisymummy · 23/05/2019 13:51

Very windy, and cold. Snow often falls well into May.
Personally I wouldn't choose Consett, especially if you're planning on having a baby. My baby is now one and I'm moving away (live about 20 mins from Consett) I can't wait. I feel there is nothing around for children to do. There's Beamish and really that's about it. Again my personal opinion.

IggyAce · 23/05/2019 14:00

Does it have to be Consett? Or are you just looking to move north? Job wise search for jobs in the North east and see which areas come up.

RICHARD0202 · 23/05/2019 14:31

Try what used to be known as CAV british aerospace on No1 industrial estate they employ cnc. There are a shortage of skilled workers he will get a job. Not necessary in Consett but around. Try british engines in newcastle. Jordons. Dyer engineering

10Nichole · 23/05/2019 15:31

Thank you for all the responses it’s much appreciated.

Puts me at ease knowing there’s jobs there for him.

It doesn’t have to necessarily be in Consett , that stood out to us really.

We would ideally live in a nice little village on the outskirts but don’t really know where to start.
We are going up for a week in June to look around the whole area where we will be looking at some houses to narrow down areas to buy.

Any suggestions on villages?
All we are after is a place with 1 pub, 1 ship etc, a traditional little village

Thank you

I live in leadgate. We relocated here 14yrs ago from down south and it was the best decision we ever made. You should join Facebook pages for areas your interested in to find out what's going on.

butterflykiss00 · 23/05/2019 19:18

Also i live in delves lane which is I consett and the house prices are worth it

CazY777 · 23/05/2019 22:42

DH, DD and I moved to Consett from the south just over 2 years ago and I really like it. The weather can be bad at times, but I haven't found it as bad as the reputation that Consett has (apart from during the beast from the east), and unlike in the south the roads are gritted well and in advance of bad weather and the buses still run! We had a good summer last year, it is always breezy but I prefer it to the stifling heat you get in the south in the summer.

I've also found that there are loads of things to do with kids, there's a softplay cafe and a role play cafe in the town, as well as the swimming pool and off road cyclepaths. There are 2 big softplay places and a trampolining place nearby, as well as playgrounds, a great farm park in Lanchester, playgroups, foreign language classes for pre-schoolers, nature reserves and lots of places to throw stones in rivers! And then you have Beamish, Diggerland, Tanfield Railway, Derwent Reservoir, Gibside and the coast isn't that far either. And you have all the museums in Newcastle which are great for a day trip. We've been to loads more places up here than we ever did living near London, as its far less hassle getting around. And being mortgage free is a real bonus too.

Hi, we have lived in Consett centre for four years now. The weather can be bad as it's one of the highest towns above sea level in the UK. The snow can be really bad and you can get cut off in the side streets but there are Facebook groups specifically to help everyone in the snow. To be honest I was amazed at the how people came together all over Consett helping dig out cars, rescue people and giving lifts to people to get to work. In our estate a group of us got together to clear out the roads the last time it was really bad. There were days hubby couldn't get to work as he couldn't get the car off the side street but the main roads are usually gritted and buses are often running even when you think they wouldn't be. We are from the north east but not Consett and have found it to be really friendly and welcoming. Consett is a huge area with many surrounding villages. There is a main bus station with buses running all over and there is literally every shop you could think of in consett, in fact four years on we are still finding new ones. My hubby works in Darlington and has a commute of at least an hour each way (sometimes two depending on traffic!) but we like Consett so much we won't consider moving (despite). There is a lot to do here and there are various community things too. I can't comment on the work side of things though.

zigzagbetty · 24/05/2019 06:58

We lived in lanchester as kids and that was a lovely village with lots of community activities going on. I have friends who have stayed there and brought up their families and still love it.
