Airbricks - what now?!

We're currently renovating our 1930s semi. We pulled the old laminate flooring up at the weekend to discover that 2 or 3 floorboards in the bay are rotten.

We looked at the airbricks outside and they are above the level of the floor inside - roughly at skirting level. There are no grilles inside so they're useless!

Outside, a new patio has just been laid. Its level is slightly lower than the original and the useless airbricks are exposed.

I'm a bit confused as to how they can be above floor level in the first place but, other than that, is there a solution? We don't want to replace the floorboards if we haven't fixed the problem and obviously ventilation needs to improve.

Any thoughts? @PigletJohn??

poke a wire through the outside airbricks. How far does it go? It it linked to a cavity in the wall?

Measure the height of the airbricks precisely, at a doorway or window opening. Are they actually above the floorboards? Or are they at joist level and not easily seen inside?

Post a photo of the airbricks please.

Meanwhile look up "periscope vents"
