How to get rid of silverfish

We have been in our house a couple of years and have had countless silverfish living with us throughout the years. They are everywhere from the kitchen, to the bathroom, the living room, in cupboards, on towels, you name it we find them. I have read about them liking to eat paper, and they like damp, dark areas etc and we have done everything to prevent this. But no matter what, they keep on appearing. I do see them scurry under the skirting board and into the grouting when the lights are turned on. Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of these, as it has really been affecting me and I can't get to sleep at night in fear of them crawling over me regardless of whether they are harmless or not. I have looked into pest control but they will spray their powder, and cannot guarantee that they will not return. I need to sort out the root cause, but I don't know what that is.

You will have silverfish due to having a damp problem or excessive moisture in the house.

I had this horrible problem when I moved into current house. Previous owner used a tumble dryer under the stairs with no way for the steam to go!

Problem lessened when the house dried out. So check if you have any water leaks anywhere or damp problems. Avoid drying clothes inside the house.

Most important thing to do is to get a dehumidifier. It will be your best friend in these circumstances. Great things to control moisture levels. That should improve things a whole lot.

I came on to suggest a dehumidifier as well. Your house is too damp.

We had this in our old house. They were mostly confined to the dining room though. No damp or moisture problem as far as we know.

We snuck up on the by surprise, like you say, they only tend to come out in the dark. So at night, turn the light on and quickly hoover up as many as we could before the had chance to scuttle back under the skirting boards.

Then we put ant powder (Nippon stuff) around the entire skirting boards while we went on holiday. Didn't want to ant powder when we were there as kids were very young. That did the trick. Never saw another one after that.

if you don't have any powder at the moment use automatic wash powder in emergency
