To take care of the builders in warm days necessary?

It's getting warmer and summer is yet to arrive.

I kinda don't know how much effort I shall make to keep the builders happy. Shall I supply cold drinks in addition to the basic biscuits and tea bags?

One of the guys today told me that he felt I'll at one point and it might because of the heat standing in the sun.

We will be moving out of the house with the entire downstairs emptied to allow them do the work. So the fridge would be gone too. Shall I worry about they no longer have access to cold milk for tea?

DH says I'm over thinking. But I think these are just basic supports.

Please give me some clue how far I shall go and where I can stop (worrying about it).Angry

Feeding and watering themselves is their responsibility. If you won't be there, they'll bring what they need. You're overthinking it.

I always supply workmen with lots of drinks and biscuits. My logic is, the cost of the things I offer are just a tiny fraction of the cost I'm paying them. And if they're happy, in theory they should do a better job.

In hot weather, I fill a litre plastic bottle with diluted squash and just give them the bottle.

Don’t worry about it. If you want, when you visit the site bring some donuts. It’s a nice gesture. When I have workmen for a one off I offer them a cup. If they are there for several days I tell them they are welcome to use the kettle. But I’m not going to spend the day making tea and coffee. Unless you are turning off the electricity leave a kettle and some mugs for them and teabags and sugar. They can pick up milk on the way in. Otherwise these are grown men I think they know what a thermos is.

I agree with your DH, but only cause I have been through it - I overthought it before we started too! We lived in the property during our build (through the winter rather than summer) and offered them a morning cuppa, if I was around, but they had free use of the kettle and supplies (Tea/coffee and milk). We occasionally had biscuits! To be honest many of them declined as they had brought their own flasks.
So many of our trade guys were used to working on sites with no facilities (new builds from the ground up) and so fend for themselves.
Agree with a PP that you could take over donuts or biscuits occasionally when you pop over, but don't make a habit of it or they rib you for forgetting!!

Oh and it is for their foreman or project manager to fully oversee their welfare, so if it is too hot for them to work he/she should be deciding how much they should be doing etc.

If youre going to be away and moved out, could you just leave some squash and tumblers for them?

Others are right, Im sure they can fend for themselves but its nice to be nice. A big bottle of squash wont cost the earth and means they can crab a cold drink if they need one.

I wouldnt worry about refrigerating milk or anything, if youre not there theyll need to pick it up on their way in.

Mixingitall · 16/05/2019 10:18

Small gestures are enough, on a day to day basis you will have enough to do, and they’ll milk it. They work through every summer!

If I'd moved out but the services were still connected then I'd supply tea and coffee but I'd expect them to drink water if they were thirsty and wanted something cold.
If the services weren't connected then it's effectively a building site and they can bring their own.

Thanks! It's good to know the general expectation. I bought some more biscuits and cold drink today as I'm around. But I figure once we move out, they wouldn't complain too much of there are less biscuits on a daily basis...

I bought very cheap kettle and mugs from the start, so will leave them in the house.
