Considering small kitchen extension. Where to start??

We are thinking about adding a small (2x 3m) single story extension to our kitchen to open up to the garden but I am a bit clueless about where to start. We are just at the stage of wanting ballpark figures so we can decide whether or not to go ahead.
Can anyone give me an idea about the usual process?

Eg do we just get a couple of builders over to give us quotes or should we start with a design professional? We obviously don't need an architect for such a small project but perhaps a draughtsman/design technician (not sure what they're called?) or a company that does design and build?

It's not a straightforward box as the extension would need to interact with an existing utility room so we need to think about doors access and redesigning the kitchen layout. Also the roof to be extended is slightly complex, currently a mix of pitch and flat roof.

If we do go ahead we'd want someone to project manage the build for us. I know it's more expensive but we really don't want the responsibility of doing it ourselves.

Many thanks!

Need a diagram!

Many builders will liaise with planning/architects etc. for you
Try and ask around for personal recommendations or use something like tradecheck

Depending on what the space is going from and to, you may need structural support - RSJ's etc.
We did because of the amount of bifold doors we wanted

Best decision we ever made - the extension made our house and honestly changed the way we live daily

Thanks jackstini
Have my hands full today but will try to post a diagram later today (I knew about the diagram rule on parking/cf neighbour threads but this is my first foray into property!)

If it's just a feasiblilty exercise, you don't want to play out for formal plans at this stage. But you will find that some builders won't come out and quote unless you have plans and / or planning permission so you'll have to ring round a bit
We used a Chartered Building Surveyor to do our plans, plus a Structural Engineer for the steelwork and foundations.

Is you house a "one off" or is it in a road of similar properties?
If the latter, it is worth having alook on council planning website and see if anyone has done similar to what you want.
Their plans give you a starting point and if you;re feeling brave, go knock on their door!
