Boiler care plans, are they worth it.

Buying my current rental house. The boiler is 5 years old and has been serviced annually. I want to stay with the plumber who installed it and looks after it at the minute. But my parents are advising me to take Out a care plan for it. Is it worth the money?

Absolutely. They are thousands to replace.

When we get a new boiler I will be getting one.

Absolutely. They are thousands to replace.

Which care plan pays for a new boiler if it breaks?

No, they are not. On average you will pay far more in fees than you would to a plumber, even assuming it will definitely break down.

If you’ve got a good local plumber then stick with them. Put some money in an account each mother to cover household repairs and you should be sorted.

I work for a heating and boiler company which offers boiler cover and it does seem like a good idea. We have different plans which vary and you can choose what to cover etc like just the boiler or the entire system.
Our top plan covers any and all call outs, parts, annual services etc. And we would also give these customers a discount should we ever install a new boiler for them.
I'm in a rental property so I don't need to worry about it but should I ever be able to own then I would personally look into boiler cover.

I think for a boiler you expect to conk out in the next few years, it’s worth it. Otherwise not (though it is helpful not to have to remember to book a service etc - they just call you when it’s time). It’s one of those things that I wouldn’t sign up for if I had more time and headspace, but which I feel is worth paying for at the moment.

No, we were with home serve. Left me over Xmas with young child and baby with a boiler they couldn't fix.
In January I asked local plumber to have a look, i ordered the part and he fixed it. Home serve agreed to pay for the part at least. Absolutely useless and rude.

We have a savings account to cover things like appliances and boiler. £50pm goes into it, and we have never needed more than what was in the pot. It builds up quite quickly.

Needmoresleep · 14/05/2019 18:44

Don’t go with British Gas. Hopeless. No interest in repairing a boiler, as they would prefer to sell you a new one.

Use your current plumber and put money aside for property emergencies.

granadagirl · 14/05/2019 18:53

Currently with British Gas, we pay £35 mths for
Annual service,
Covered for breakdown 365 days
Parts and labour, with no excess
Also covered is electric & plumbing

We’ve had electric shower fixed
Pull cord that burnt out, and also guy who fitted it didn’t do it properly!!
We’ve had tap fixed in kitchen, stop tap that was leaking

For us it’s worth it😀
There’s so many cowboys out there nowadays
At least with BG they don’t look at your house think detached must have money xxxx

Figure8 · 14/05/2019 19:03

I'm with BG too

The amount of times they've fixed the boiler, fixed all the various incarnations of crap plumbing in my house... well worth it.
Not to mention that they normally come out once, pretty much at my convenience- totally worth it.

So many plumbers won't even come out for a leaking tap, so I like that they will
☺

We have a homecare plan with British Gas. They have always been quite quick to come out and carry out any repairs that are required. It is probably more expensive than putting away money each month for repairs but does mean that we don't have to ring round for a plumber in an emergency.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/05/2019 10:47

My lovely plumber Charges £72 for a service and safety check. I've taken out emergency cove, with my home insurance which covers the boiler so hopefully that is the answer.

We have been with BG for years and have had excellent service. They have come out on Easter Sunday a couple of times, walked half a mile uphill in 12" deep snow to fix our boiler and generally been really helpful and quick to respond. Worth every penny IMO.

Zebedee88 · 17/05/2019 10:59

Hmm, originally I would have said yes. However , the boiler care I had stated that they do emergency call out etc, I'd been with them for over 2 years before I needed them, and when I really needed them they couldn't help! Said the earliest time would be in 4 days. So I ended up paying out extra money to get an emergency plumber. So for me, it wasnt worth the money .

TapasForTwo · 17/05/2019 14:56

BG come out within 24 hours.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/05/2019 17:53

My parents had awful service from BG. So I will never go with them. They ended up replacing the boiler as BG just didn't fix it.

we have ideal boiler and took out their cover - get annual service and next day service - always finding something wrong with it - over 10 years probably had every part replaced - but now its obsolete so next time they will condemn it - also covers complete heating / hot water system - so feel we've had our moneys worth

JellySlice · 17/05/2019 20:56

Sure, you can put some money aside every month and just call out a local Corgi plumber when needed.

But will that work when something goes wrong at 5pm on Christmas Eve?

We used our Boiler and Plumbing service plan, and it was fixed by 7pm. Happy Christmas Smile
