Sliding doors - help please

Looking for advice from anyone who has recently chosen sliding doors for their project!

We are at the early stages with the builder. It's a slightly unusual situation in that we are using a friend who has recently done a very good job on two houses owned by people we know. We only have the plans we submitted for planning which he tells us he can work from but it's proving trickier when trying to source things like sliding doors as don't have exact dimensions.

Ideally we'd like to use Sunflex SVG30 or similar as we're after slim sight lines. Would suppliers be able to quote off the plans below? The builder has come back with a quote of £14750 ex VAT for the sliding doors/fixed panes from a local company though he hasn't yet seen any photos Shock

If anyone has any recommendations of sliding doors they've recently installed it would be great (even better if they don't mind sharing costs as I have no idea what we should be looking for at this stage!).

Thanks in advance

I have no experience of sliding doors but I really would not be doing anything until all your plans are in - the final one will have all the dimensions on it

OBface · 11/05/2019 11:37

Thanks Patstar - we have approval (in fact have had a for a year hence the need to get cracking!).

It looks like a lovely extension - good luck with it all x

Thank you - not sure we can afford it all in one go Smile

Added another image of the downstairs floorplan as the previous one is tiny. Looking at it I think we have a fixed pane of 5.3m and then 2 x 5.3m of sliding doors. Can't believe I didn't spot that before Grin. Any idea of how much we should be looking at?

I can't make out from the plans the exact design and measurements but I can't believe you have individual sliders of over 5m?

We had some done a couple of years ago. Ours were three panes of glass for an area of circa 4.5m. You couldn't go much bigger as the weight would be so difficult to slide I would have thought. We paid circa £4K but was part of a large extension.

I have bifold doors, aluminum, cost about 5k I think. They have been in a few years now and I have no complaints. I was warned to avoid the cheaper pvc. Not sure why yours cost so much more - are they some super advanced type?

OBface · 11/05/2019 15:58

Marie - yes the plans are quite hard to read! I’ll have to look into the maximum width... Hope the architect hasn’t made a mistake!

Science - I had expected the quote to be quite a bit more and was worried that builder had just gone for a ‘cheap’ option.

It’s quite a big project to hopefully get a house to live in for the foreseeable. As such we’re willing to pay for minimal sight lines etc.

I don't think you can have sliders with individual panes much over 1.5 m each. Ours weigh a lot. We decided against bi folds as they have to be smaller and therefore not such a good view of the garden as lots of frames to look through. Also they have to have lighter glass due to the pressure on the frames and hinges as they hang at a right angle to the runners. Some neighbours did an extension and opted for the bi-folds and came to view ours in a panic as the glass was a lot thinner and actually flexed. It was ok as this was the design to reduce weight

Bifold are better for smaller openings though but the size you have OP I think you have chosen the better option. I'm interested in that you have one fixed pane of glass of 5m....seems almost commercial grade and would need a crane to lift it?

Approx 16m of sliding doors divided by 3 doors? that's impossible/insane

Hecateh · 11/05/2019 17:02

Looking at the plan the whole of that wall is only 6.something metres so the doors must be 5.3 in total

OBface · 11/05/2019 22:17

Marie - that's really interesting, especially the fixed pane, hadn't considered weight at all. Will have to do some more research...

Joan the 5.3m sliding doors and fixed pane are on 3 separate walls

I am in the middle of getting quotes for sliding doors. You can get panes over 1.5 mts, e.g this company does the product you mention and states 3m wide by 2.8 as their max.
www.tvwindows.com/doors/sunflex-sliding-doors

Anyhow, a much smaller aperture with two doors sliding was quoted to me at £9k.
Where are you based? London or nearby?
You can get quotes by yourself with the plan and approx measurements, but I would not order until I am sure if final measurements.
One of the quotes I have is from IQ Glass you can find them online.

TunstallTansy · 11/05/2019 23:07

We used Kat UK.

www.katuk.co.uk/

We have two lots of 3m sliding doors - they're triple track so each door can open each way. Each 3m is made up of three doors one metre wide.

OBface · 12/05/2019 09:35

Redandblue thanks - good to hear our sizes aren't an impossibility. Expecting to pay a bit more for the doors than the quote our builder came back with. Hopefully will be worth it! We're in the East Midland but looking more widely for suppliers. Off to look up IQ glass...

Tunstall we need individual panels of approx 1.76m which I'm not sure Katuk do. Look great though Sad

Make sure you can slide them. Ours are 1.5m having checked and they are heavy doors but as said, they are lovely with fantastic unobstructed views
