Has anyone done this and how much did it cost? We also want to reinstate a fireplace (not working, just for the look) in the middle so costs on tgat would be appreciated too.

I don’t have up to date costs but just putting in a simple rail and sliding doors for a wardrobe is way cheaper than a built in bespoke wardrobe.

A builder would give quotes for opening up the fireplace but you would need to allow for a new surround, hearth and making good. The fire bricks might not be in good condition and not pleasant to look at. What then? The surround and hearth can be as cheap or expensive as you want!

^^ that depends on your alcoves being deep enough for a coat hanger though. We had similar and couldn't hang stuff up on a rail sideways as not deep enough. Always meant to get some built out like in op's picture but never got round to it!

If you are willing to do some DIY:
Measure your alcoves - you might be able to fit IKEA pax frames into them. You could add architrave to make it look built in for a fraction of the price of bespoke fitted.
Fireplaces - if you don't want a working fireplace you can fit a second hand one yourself. I just bought one for £60 off eBay. It was bloody heavy 😂 but we eventually got it in the car. The Victorian and Edwardian ones screw to the wall, if there was one originally you should be able to reopen the original hole and screw it into place - be warned it probably won't central on the chimney breast, they are often off-centre. Dustsheet everything, chimneyss are very messy! I used grate polish on ours to re-blacken it.

There s a reclamation place that I can buy a fireplace from so that's fine but I'll need to get builder costs.

I'm assuming a joiner to do the wardrobes will be The most expensive bit. I take it someone like Sharps would be extortionate?

A joiner did ours, £550 each wardrobe, floor to ceiling, one with shelves built in. We had to paint them ourselves.

I had a built in cupboard/wardrobes built along one side of my bedroom to disguise the slope of the stair bulk head. It cost £1500+ vat if I remember correctly.

If the alcoves are a bit shallow for the width of hangers just have them built so they stand a bit proud of the chimney breast to make thwm deeper.

Hi. Still in progress but picture is of Ikea PAX wardrobes I have built into my alcoves. Wardrobes were around £750-800 themselves. Need to add on cost of timber infills all around and a plinth to sit the wardrobes on (I wanted to raise them up a bit so I can follow the skirting board underneath but haven't done that yet). Probably around £150 for all the extra bits of wood, shelves, extra door and paint (lots of paint and special primer). As the one alcove was bigger than the other I've made a low level cupboard (for the laundry basket) with shelves above. Still need to paint these bits but getting there slowly.
