How to control home wifi access at certain times of day.

I want to be able to block certain devices from using our home wifi at certain times of day.

Found an APP on line but not sure if its secure and they have a weird note on front page saying their son is ill......

Anyone got any ideas how to do it?

Looked at out internet provider and they have general parietal controls blocking certain sites: I want to be able to do it by time.

Just seen this "Can you set WIFI to turn off at a certain time?
Set Router-enforced Time Limits for Internet Access. Most routers have a setting which gives you the ability to cut off access to the internet at a certain time of day. ... Go into your wireless router's setup and turn off your internet connection from midnight to 5 in the morning. "

Thanks. Will give that a go.
In my ideal world I would like to be able to turn off my childrens, and leave mine live, but will give that a go in the meantime.
Thanks for your help!

I would love to be able to do this too. Hope someone has an easy answer. This sort of stuff makes my brain hurt.

Change the passwords at night.

My son's tablet has a timer in parental controls :-)

Small device called Koalasafe which plugs into your router will do all the above. It was about £70 on amazon. You can control the gours that the internet is on, and for different people, and what they can access, from your phone or computer.
Some routers have the facility on their own, I think, but mine didn't.

By routers have parental controls, not sure about others but would assume most do. Google your router and parental controls to check how to set them

hiddenmnetter · 10/05/2019 07:03

You can do it by MAC address- each device that connects to the router has a unique MAC address that can be restricted. So you could work out which is your children’s phones etc and restrict those but not yours.

Google WiFi has this ability natively but not all routers do. It depends on the software.

I'm also very interested in this, does anyone know if you can do it on a sky box? Off to google koala thing in the meantime 🙂

I use home halo. Each person has their own access schedule and content filter. Just means me and dh can still access the internet while the dc's is turned off. Its basically a router connected to the main router

pikapikachu · 10/05/2019 11:53

Which Internet provider do you have?

I can log into the router and set a schedule there.

Many devices have a timer in the parental
Controls section. You can set it so it works a maximum of say 1 hour a day then won't work until tomorrow.

I would have a look at mesh networks.

I have a BT Whole Home system which I have used (I have virgin broadband - you can connect up).

There are other systems. I have found my one to be very good.

Here’s a recent article: www.techadvisor.co.uk/test-centre/network-wifi/best-mesh-wi-fi-network-systems-3661110/

Earslaps · 10/05/2019 22:54

Home mesh networks are great. I bought a TP Link Deco system. I can add all devices to a profile and schedule certain times for access, time limits, pause WiFi when I want and see what sites have been accessed. It also has a separate guest network so guest devices can't access the devices on your home network.

riverislands · 10/05/2019 23:00

BT routers can do this individually.

wheresmyphone · 12/05/2019 20:15

Thanks all. Doing loads of reading on all this. At very limits of my tech ability but working through it. Will get there in the end.

We have older kids who then borrow old discarded phones from mates. We collect all devices 8pm or what ever at night then have found they are hopping on the wifi with their mates old phones.

Taking to turning off the wifi at night but its annoying as I like working at night when houses quiet.

Life style of the Amish looking attractive at the moment. Smile

If they’re bringing additional devices into the house then you need something like Google WiFi (I don’t work for google honest, I just have their mesh WiFi and like it!)

Basically you can restrict ALL devices except the ones you choose to allow- this means it doesn’t matter who comes into the house, unless the device has been okay’d there’s no WiFi connection. That said, I presume they’d just use their data plans if they didn’t have WiFi unless your house is a dead zone...
