Extending social housing property

I'm just wondering if anyone has ever done this or knows whether it is possible etc.

We live in a 2 bed council house, we have a DS with disabilities and a DD. The council will put us on the transfer list and we can homeswap ourselves if we can find a suitable property.

However, this house is perfect for us (other than the lack of the one extra room). The garden is very secure, which is perfect for our little escape artist. We live close to family who help out a lot. This house is in the catchment area for the special school and my son is really settled here.

We have a box room (not classed as a bedroom because it is too small) would it be possible to have that knocked through and take out the built in wardrobe so we have three rooms? If so how do we go about it? Phone and ask? Write a letter and ask?

I would think you would have to write to the council with your reasons or perhaps seek advise from any charity that might help or perhaps citizen advice? Good luck

Thankyou, I'm going to have to really look into this more, I've been struggling to find any information online and I don't want to get an automatic no by going about it the wrong way.

You would probably need to write and ask, but any work agreed to is likely to have to be carried out by a suitable tradesperson.

Your rent may go up as it would be calculated on a 3 bedroom.

The alternative is to request an OT assessment and see if they make any recommendations.
