Would it be weird to build a cloakroom with the washing machine/boiler inside?

We have hard time to put the washing machine in the kitchen (not enough space for all appliance!).

Would it be weird to build the cloakroom big enough to have the washing machine and boiler inside? Blush

Ideas are welcome!

My parents have this with a tumble drier on top. It’s their utility room.

brownjumper · 06/05/2019 18:20

It's where I have mine. And my friend gets. It isn't uncommon I think

Swearwolf · 06/05/2019 18:22

I have this - my lootility! It would be a massive downstairs loo otherwise so it made sense to us. We have a toilet and sink on one side, boiler, washer and dryer on the other side, with a worktop on top for folding. Shelves above with laundry tablets etc where the kids can't reach. It could look tidier if we cared enough- we could have got cupboards along that side to hide it all. But it's fine, and way nicer than having them in the kitchen!

I've got a little laundry room with a toilet in it (also has the boiler). I'm planning to remodel my kitchen extension & actually the room a bit bigger so it can also have a downstairs shower. It works really well for me, can't see any disadvantages.

BingBo · 06/05/2019 18:25

Grin Thank you for the quick response! Glad it's not uncommon.

Now I just need to convince DH to allow this extra space to build this cloakroom. Honestly, otherwise, I can't think of a way to have all these messy daily things hide away from sight, including the cleaning cupboard!

We have this arrangement. Big beast of an oil boiler in a room outside that adjoins the house but could easily be in the house if it was smaller and more modern!
I've attached a few photos.
Works really well for us.

Also I had a big built in cupboard included
One is contains bedding and towels etc
Other spare fridge for drinks( not sure how hygiene it is🤷‍♀️) shelves for vases, hooks for coats, cordless Dyson etc.

When we moved here the washing machine was in the downstairs loo. We had it moved to the kitchen when we redid it. Honestly I thought it was odd. I'd rather have a bigger cloak room rather than guests peeing next to the washing machine.

On saying that, if there is no other space, then it's where it's going to have to go

wellballstoyou · 07/05/2019 15:52

be odd to me having a wee next to the washing machine

BallyHockeySticks · 07/05/2019 17:04

You just need to follow building regs about electricity in bathrooms. I would keep it pretty minimal myself - the downstairs loo is one place guests tend to go so I wouldn't want it to be difficult to tidy.

Kedgeree · 07/05/2019 17:10

We took our downstairs loo and basin out and put the washing machine in there instead. 2 beds and 2 baths upstairs so it was a more efficient use of space for us.

TheCraicDealer · 07/05/2019 17:19

Our new build has this- it's a small room but there is a giant double door cupboard with the washing machine, dryer and boiler hidden behind. The doors obviously hide it from visitors but tbh I'm just so thankful to have indoor space for the appliances I don't think I'd be bothered if you could see them! Our kitchen is quite small so we really couldn't spare the cupboard space to move them in there anyway.

StatisticallyChallenged · 07/05/2019 17:55

We have ours in our upstairs bathroom, built in to the unit under the sink. I love it!

Gigglinghysterically · 08/05/2019 02:22

Having a boiler in a boiler or cloakroom is okay. I think having a washing machine in a cloakroom is very odd. I definitely wouldn't want it and if viewed a house that was for sale that had a washing machine in the cloakroom it would definitely put me off buying it.

As you are building a cloakroom does that mean it is an extension to your property. If so, could you not build a cloakroom and a separate small utility room.?

WineGummyBear · 08/05/2019 07:26

We have a downstairs shower room with washing machine, tumble dryer, shower, toilet and sink. It's unusual in this country (normal in some others I think).

To me it's more logical to put a washing machine in a shower room than a kitchen diner.

wellballstoyou · 08/05/2019 11:00

it would put me off buying a property because to me it screams a lack of space for an essential appliance.

WishIwas19again · 08/05/2019 12:31

we have a small toilet upstairs and had thought about the same. But our electrician told us you're not allowed electrical sockets in the same room as a 'bathroom' for building regs. Don't know if that's true, and if there are ways of getting round it (separating door between loo and washer etc.?)

caoraich · 08/05/2019 12:35

I lived in a flat with this and it was great. There was a sliding door that covered it all over, very similar to the setup when I've lived in USA. They think that us having washing machines in the kitchen is weird and I'm inclined to agree!

clarrylove · 10/05/2019 18:31

Put it in a built in cupboard and it will be fine.

Secondsop · 10/05/2019 20:14

We’ve got a lootility - big downstairs room with toilet, shower, basin, washing machine and dryer, and storage shelves. I would absolutely not be without it. I vastly prefer it to having the washing machine in the kitchen area. Only thing is that I don’t feel quite right hanging clothes to dry in there, so I hang non-dryer stuff upstairs. But I find it a brilliant thing to have.

BubblesBuddy · 10/05/2019 22:46

We have split up quite a big area into a fully fitted laundry room and separate cloakroom. If you have space, do this. It’s much better to separate washing from the loo. It also means you can decorate the loo in any way you please! It’s much more pleasant for guests. I haven’t had my washing machine and dryer in the kitchen for 35 years and I certainly don’t want it in the loo!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 11/05/2019 19:49

Makes much more sense to leave your laundry appliances in either a dedicated utility, or a bathroom. I don’t cook with clothes, why do I need them in my kitchen? I’d much rather use the space under the sink for a dishwasher.

MyOtherProfile · 11/05/2019 19:54

By cloakroom do you mean toilet or place where you hang coats? If it's the latter where is it? Is it going to be like a porch?

FutureMrsTempah · 11/05/2019 20:14

Loving the term lootility room! It's what we'll have once our extension is built! Our downstairs bathroom will continue to have loo, basin and shower and where the bath was will have the washing machine, tumble drier and boiler. And we'll finally have an upstairs bathroom!

PickAChew · 11/05/2019 21:31

How on earth is having a washing machine in a cloakroom any more odd than having one in the kitchen?
