Wren kitchens & pushy staff

Hi,

I've recently had an appointment at Wren, after looking through the brochure they gave me I was pretty sure they'd be able to help me sort out a new kitchen.

Initially the staff there were very friendly, maybe slightly too friendly, and helpful. I gave the all the measurements and we started to 'build' the kitchen at no point during the two and a half hour appointment were prices mentioned until the very last few
Minutes.

Anyway my 'dream' kitchen as they like to put it came in at around £28000, this is well above my expectations. And also included appliances which I stated that I did not intend to purchase from Wren.

The salesman leaves me to go and ask his manager a question, he left the costing sheet behind and I noticed that the cost of the kitchen units could be halved if I took a lower range and changed the colour slightly, so I mentioned this when he came back, at this point his attitude changed instantly, he said the finish wouldn't be as good and his friendly persona became quite rude and he almost completely lost interest.

A few minutes later the very pushy store manager comes over and asks "what's going on?" He replies that he's now quoting for the cheaper range and she barks "Why?" I told her that it was simply too expensive and whilst it's nice to have an integrated laundry bin, it's really not worth £8000 to me.

At this point I could see the hard sell was about to start and I could feel myself getting flustered, they started talking about interest free payments and how I could pay that way rather that upfront as I intended. Neither of them wanted to let me go without committing to a purchase of a high value kitchen, it almost felt like I had to argue my way out of buying something that i can't afford. They were adamant I'd pay a deposit there and then even though I told them
I wasn't going to without speaking to my builder first.

After another ten minutes of being grilled I finally escaped.

Now I did like the kitchen that was designed, albeit it was way out of my budget, I said that surely everyone has a cut off point and you have to stop somewhere, my sister has had a fully bespoke kitchen installed for just over 30k, if I was going to spend that amount I'd probably do the same.

Anyway I really feel like I don't want to use wren now, but I also don't want to waste another two and a half hours of my time, I felt so awkward whilst I was there and it made wonder how someone not so confident would have reacted, 10 years ago I wouldn't have been brave enough to say no.

Has anyone else had a situation like this at all? It actually reminded me of Rogue Traders, and the old double glazing sales pitch.

Any other recommendations of fully build kitchen units?

Just don't know what to do from here Confused

Sounds awful!!
If you have a joiner or builder try trade kitchens - I've been to both Howdens and Benchmark today they were both lovely and point you in the direction of low medium and high ranges

I even said I'll try to keep my granite work surfaces and they agreed and even said don't go for xyz as it won't fit with the blue colour of my granite

Decormad38 · 04/05/2019 15:10

Wren kitchens have horrendous reviews. Why would anyone use them? Try DIY kitchens. All joiners say they are the best. Our massive kitchen was a quarter of that price.

CamdenTownie · 04/05/2019 15:29

I've just read a thread on here about diy kitchens and looked at the website, unfortunately it's about 200 miles away, I'm thinking of emailing them With measurements and getting a quote, the worktops are much cheaper than wren quoted for a start.

CamdenTownie · 04/05/2019 15:31

Decormad - how big is massive? I admit I was pricing up a large kitchen but still I wasn't expecting such a high price. Also quite suspicious that no costs were mentioned until I'd been there well over two hours.

LittleLongDog · 04/05/2019 15:37

That wasn’t my experience with them at all - the first thing they did when we sat down was ask our budget.

We did still get the ‘payment plan’ hard sell at the end but just said no.

DerelictWreck · 04/05/2019 15:44

Wren kitchens are known for being appalling, I never understand why people continue to go there!!

John Lewis, ikea and Howdens are your best bet. Try one of those!

floppybit · 04/05/2019 15:45

I work for IKEA kitchens so I am biased, but they have won the which Best Buy for flat pack kitchens for the last few years running. 25 year guarantee, very reasonably priced, really clever interior pull outs and fittings. Any reason why the kitchen has to be pre built? Ikea will fit for you as well at a reasonable cost.......

CamdenTownie · 04/05/2019 15:49

We are having a house built, so already have a fitter/builder, I've had an ikea kitchen in the past and it was ok, but I'm not looking for a
Scandi style kitchen really and would prefer fully built units over flat pack - it's just a preference.

I have friends who had a terrible experience with Wren and spent months trying to get the kitchen they wanted without faults and breakages.

I would always walk away if I got the hard sell approach. It instantly puts my back up.

Gonegrey31 · 04/05/2019 15:49

I’ve just installed IKEA units with additional help ( worktops etc) from a small local independent kitchen shop. Fabulous bespoke kitchen, all for about £7,000 including AEG double oven . Dont go near that hard sell company and well done on standing firm .

CamdenTownie · 04/05/2019 15:52

@DerelictWreck - currently have a Bowden's kitchen, it's been in place for six years no problems, is still in fantastic condition. No hard sell from the salesman, in fact he came round measured up asked I wanted and that was it!

I didn't think wren would be so different, it's possibly because the kitchen in the new house will be much bigger, wondering if they thought I was a millionaire! No idea why they would have though.

Howdens!

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 04/05/2019 15:54

My sister had a terrible time with wren too. Reviews are atrocious.
Where are you? There is a brilliant independent place in Sunderland called jade interiors. Our kitchen is amazing, was all hassle free, lots of visits to the house, lots of made to measure and cost comparable to cheapest howdens kitchen with trade cabinets etc we put in to our old house before selling.

MsRinky · 04/05/2019 15:56

You can't just e-mail DIY for a quote - they don't offer a design service, that's why it's cheap. They show the prices for all their units, and they tell you how to plan your kitchen either on paper or online. They will check your order according to your plan.

CamdenTownie · 04/05/2019 15:56

I'm just outside London, but willing to travel, maybe not to Sunderland though...

Another vote here for DIY kitchens, they come fully built and the fitter I used said his most frequent ones are from Howdens but that my DIY one was far better and more solid.

DIY don't design (which is the DIY part of their name) but will work to another companies design or you can go on their Planner site and do it yourself, maybe using one that someone else has done for you as a guide (although I bet that you haven't got the WREN one.).

planner.diy-kitchens.com/basket/options/#basketItem1

The above is the address for the planner as you can't access it from their main site as it is hosted separately.

It's well worth a play as you are not pressured at all and can try it with all the different finishes and doors.

I love mine - one unit was slightly damaged on delivery and they replaced it - and I got to keep the original which made a great cupboard elsewhere.

Can post pics if you want

CamdenTownie · 04/05/2019 16:08

@MsRinky - well this is on the website so maybe you can!

@Hecateh thanks that what what I was thinking, you're correct though Wren couldn't give me the plan because I didn't pay a deposit!

But I know what I want and my builder is more than willing and able to advise re sizes ect I also have structural drawings so have exact measurements.

OP posts:
WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 04/05/2019 16:19

I've been quoted 28 k for a custom made German kitchen from an independent kitchen shop.
I didn't think Wren could be that expensive!

CamdenTownie · 04/05/2019 16:23

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo neither did I until I was trapped in there for so long!

It must vary between branches, as I’m delighted with my Wren kitchen. They stuck completely within the budget I gave them, came to my house to discuss plans and take measurements, ripped up the plans and started again (without a murmur of complaint!) when I changed my mind on layout, spent hours with me in the showroom discussing all the options for fittings etc, delivered on time and made a beautiful job of it.
They coordinated with my builder and tiler to get the project done in the most economical way. The whole thing was £20K, including demolishing a wall and getting structural engineer and architects involved. I used the Dundee branch, and they were great.

Frankiestein402 · 04/05/2019 16:47

Have gone through 3 kitchen installs (house moves/parents) over the last 7 years - first and best was from nationalkitchens.co.uk, no design service but great customer service and top quality units, 2nd was wren - poor quality units - significant proportion damaged on delivery and drawer/door edges easily chipped - they did offer design service but it missed extra spacer needed to let inside curved door open - fitter didn't catch it until too late so had to kludge with hinge adjustment - never quite right - 3rd most recent - howdens appears good enough but haven't lived with it yet

Apart from avoiding wren I'd argue most important factor is choice of fitter. (didn't use national kitchens in 2nd instance because had not realised how much better their units were/how bad wren was - 3rd instance was parents & their fitters choice

DonkeyHohtay · 04/05/2019 16:49

We bought a kitchen from them last year and we didn't have a hard sell at all. We were fairly sure of what we wanted before we went in though. And our fitter was superb. Really top notch.

FookMeFookYou · 04/05/2019 17:09

Great experience with Wren for us. Knew what we wanted, just said no to the bits we didn't and everything ran like clockwork. Kitchen fitter ran through bits with us as he came across any issues or if he had questions. Great job and looks fantastic. Our kitchen was only 3.5k reduced from 7k though. Can't imagine needing a 20-30k kitchen 😬 i'd much rather have a kitchen and a holiday if I had that kind of money
