Bifold doors

How do you choose and what looks best? Any hints or tips. I don't want ones that end up warping or not closing properly.

Following with interest as we need to chose some too... my architect told me metal frames are best though

anonforthespies43267 · 03/05/2019 18:46

We need to choose some too so jumping on here !

llangennith · 03/05/2019 18:57

Members of the family have had these in a few houses and all I can advise is that you get what you pay for. The cheap ones do warp and the best are metal within a good track.

We have aluminium. They weren't cheap, but they are worth every penny!

maryberryslayers · 03/05/2019 19:28

Get aluminium. It doesn't sound glam but they look great, can be sprayed any colour, work well and will last. Do not get wood.
If you're going flush with floor and patio (which you should imo) make sure you have the appropriate aco drain and patio levels put in. You'll also need to consider supporting beams in the in the ceiling etc depending on your width.
Choose a company that specialise in bifolds not just a window company.
Make sure you have one that opens independently for everyday use and that they stack on the outside when in use.
Budget for redecoration costs.

Great tips thank you @maryberryslayers

Mintandthyme · 03/05/2019 22:20

We have aluclad
One opens independently for daily use
They stack outwards
Worth every penny !!

ParkingIInPlainSight · 04/05/2019 07:20

How do you make sure they don’t leak if they are flush to the floor?

We had these put in nearly 4 years ago, brilliantly made. Worth thinking about blinds too in the planning stage. We have a roller blind over every pane that works really well although my husband was skeptical.

EvaHarknessRose · 04/05/2019 07:44

(Will look up the brand of our doors later for you)

Re: blinds, I went for a custom made (budget) full length roller blind (its an auberginey colour) and it looks brilliant, very low profile when up and adds warmth/colour when down, easier to lower one blind than three every time I thought.

elasticfantastic · 04/05/2019 08:59

I'm thinking of getting the Venetian blinds that are built in between the panes of glass... anyone any experience of those?

HippyHobbitHumper · 04/05/2019 09:00

For those of you who've had bifold doors installed, is the room noticeably colder (say in winter when doors are closed)?

Mintandthyme · 04/05/2019 09:20

No.
We have underfloor heating so even distribution and no issue with draughts from door

Hoppahouse · 04/05/2019 14:57

We have aluminium anthracite bifolds and I love them! Ours aren't flush with the floor as there is a small step down to the patio.
I did look in to integrated blinds, but they were around £1200 extra and we just didn't have the extra money. Having said that, I'm not sure I'd have bothered closing them much anyway 🤷‍♀️

roses2 · 04/05/2019 17:45

We've got Schuco bifold doors which are excellent quality

EvaHarknessRose · 04/05/2019 21:53

Ours is less draughty than the old doors, I haven't noticed any draught apart from every other door in the house 😁

OP, our ones are ''Ultimate Evo Aluminium', the only ones our fitter uses, i think they are relatively easy to fit due to design, positive reviews online. I am v happy with it.

Iggly · 04/05/2019 21:55

We went for sliding doors in the end - rules out bifolds as didn’t want doors in the way.

If the opening is wide enough then sliding doors are a good alternative

MountainEagle · 04/05/2019 21:58

We have aluminium ones. Our installer said he doesn’t even offer UPVC ones because they aren’t fit for purpose and don’t last resulting in huge hassle for him when people complain. If you get an odd number of panes you can open the end one like a door by itself.
