Friendliest place to live

Do you live in a friendly town / village? Interested to know where in the U.K. people are happiest and find it easiest to make friends - adults and kids alike.

We're not looking to move right now but need to think about it and, whilst we live in a well-known town in the SE which visitors assume is lovely, it's great to look at but not so easy to make friends or maintain relationships. It's very transient - people move in and out, lots of people from overseas which is good but means they're often here for a short while others are attracted here as it's got a bit of Guess Where We Live credibility but means they're not here to be part of a community as such.

Not knocking it - in many ways it's a great place but just wishing our DD was growing up somewhere where there's more of an extended family feel or bit of local personality.

I live in a 'new town' that is mostly full of young families and it is very friendly.

In London it's East Finchley, according to Time Out. I find that a bit surprising, not sure why.
I had a great time growing up on the outskirts of Glasgow. Close to the town and friends, but easy access to brilliant sailing, walking, riding etc.

Weird, I moved from East Finchley to the guts of south London and find the latter much friendlier.

I can vouch for Nottingham being friendly!

Somewhere northern in my experience

Folkestone has been amazing to us...I think it’s a combination of the fact that there are lots of families moving down from London who are chuffed to pieces that they have scored a huge period property for less than the price of a tiny flat in zone three yet can still be back in zone 1 in less then an hour if need be 😁😁 coupled with the sheer joy of living in a holiday destination that has very diverse and absolutely beautiful scenery; North Downs, countryside, stunning beaches - it seems like you could paddle to France on a clear day. There are lots of different activities and groups, most of which are free so we’ve found it very quick to settle and get to know people. Some days I go for a run and just can’t believe how many people are grinning like idiots at me...and then I realise I’m doing it too!

Anywhere in Cumbria. Proud Cumbrian! Carlisle was voted the happiest place to live a few years ago - I agree. A lot of people probably wouldn’t though!

Lurks, I'm from SE Kent and love that you love it.

Nice village just outside a small town in West Yorkshire
I must have at least 2 conversations with complete strangers most days, plus I know a lot of people so I’m always chatting.

Didsbury. Hands down the friendliest, and child friendliest, place I have ever lived.

SnowsInWater · 02/05/2019 23:05

Can't give you the friendliest but avoid Lewes in East Sussex. A few months after we moved in we got an anonymous letter - the full on "cut letters out of a newspaper and stick them down" type - telling us to "go back to where you came from". We had moved from Brighton, 20 minutes down the road Grin

Following as I'd like to know this too. Currently in a very unfriendly midlands market town and miserable

Unihorn · 02/05/2019 23:11

We're pretty friendly in Wales!

I live in Liverpool and it is hands down one of the friendliest places I've ever been never mind lived (except for a little Turkish town called dalyan, though my dm suspects that this is because I was young, unmarried, white and reasonably well off at the time.)

Backseatonthebus · 02/05/2019 23:19

I've lived all over England and Nottingham is definitely the friendliest place in my experience.
