Is a utility total futility?

I know this has been done to death but we’re mid- extension and having a wobble. DH is thinking we should bin off the utility and have a larger kitchen space, I would like the utility as I hate laundry drying all over the house. Is the kitchen space at 4m by 3m going to feel too small? (I think that sounds pretty big.) The utility is 1.5m x 2.96m.

I'm pro utity room. Although in your case I'd ditch the sink and have a bigger kitchen or more cupboard space in utility room, unless your lift style needs a utility room kitchen for washing football boots etc?

Gingernaut · 02/05/2019 17:13

An actual, proper utility would be my absolute dream.

Shutting off the noisy machines, somewhere to stash brooms, mops and buckets and a proper low sluice, with a flip top grill, where I could fill buckets without having to try and manoeuvre the bucket under the kitchen sink tap and back!

Heaven.

Could you move the door to the utility room to be in the kitchen where the x is in the utity room then have corner cupboards workspace under the window to maximise the space?

Fedupflo · 02/05/2019 17:21

Move the sink up next to the x and leave room to keep your ironing board up under the window especially if you have a nice view. I spend more time ironing than using the sink.

Oh and your DH is BVVU

Oh no I wish I hadn't read this thread now! I'm moving in two days from a house with a utility (but no sink or radiator in that room so definitely can't dry laundry in there) to one with a huge kitchen but no utility!

Am I making a huge mistake?

SecondHandTicking · 02/05/2019 17:34

Billywig no utility is entirely a first world problem! I'm sure there are loads of lovely things in your new house, such as your giant kitchen. Please don't worry and just enjoy it.

The person who does most of the laundry should have more say on this. Personally anything to avoid mixing laundry and cooking smells etc... having washing around will only make your kitchen and house feel smaller

solittletime · 02/05/2019 17:41

Could you swap them round and have utility go out on to the terrace and kitchen flowing more towards dining room?

yomellamoHelly · 02/05/2019 18:43

We have a tiny utility. Ultimately I want to move things around to make it bigger. Think it's a game changer of a space to have. Soooooo useful

Enterthewolves · 02/05/2019 18:58

@BreakfastAtSquiffanys I like that idea, hmmmmm
@downcasteyes we are also having exactly that debate

If you move utility door to narrow end, you might need to keep old dining room door in the position, or scoot it along the wall towards kitchen a bit.

Also, a utility can have a row of cupboards above the appliances, so extra cupboard space compared with a kitchen alone A large kitchen would still not add enough to make up for them, in terms of storage.
