Does anyone have a shower that is fed from a combi boiler?

If so, what is it like? I'm thinking of changing to that shower system if/ when I replace my boiler.

I do, it works fine!

Mintandthyme · 28/04/2019 18:32

Yes
It’s great
We have a pressurised pump also so no issues with water pressure

Iggly · 28/04/2019 18:33

Its fine. Heats up quickly. Only issue is if your boiler goes then no shower (previously we had electric showers so this wasn’t an issue).
Also the pressure drops if other people use water but that was an issue with our electric as well from memory

dudsville · 28/04/2019 18:33

Yrs we have two showers off the boiler. It's great. It looks better and there are no problems.

RosaWaiting · 28/04/2019 18:33

do you have a separate electric one?

had 2 flats with shower connected to combi boiler. It's hot water on demand so all good.

AnyoneButAnton · 28/04/2019 18:35

Fine. No additional pump, and it’s perfectly adequate pressure up to the loft conversion. But people need to be considerate about using taps etc while someone else is in the shower.

Figure8 · 28/04/2019 18:43

Brilliant! Thank you so much for the replies.
I'm in a really hard water area, and my current electric shower can't cope.

Thank you allSmile

Aqualisa do a variety. Among their round-knob mixers, they make (or made, I haven't had one recently) a cartridge that balances the hot and cold pressures somewhat if they vary during use, e.g. if someone turns a tap on (but this cartridge, I think, does not have thermostatic action). Their ordinary thermostatic round-knob mixers have a very fast mechanism that should prevent you getting frozen or scalded anyway. They built their reputation on that design.

If not listed, and you want one, try their customer service desk. They do make very good showers.

Figure8 · 28/04/2019 18:57

Thank you Piglet...
I was going to go with British Gas, and they don't offer that ( I don't think!) but I'll have a look.
At this stage I don't really know what I don't know!

Ours is fine - no additional pumps - really hard water etc. Heats up fine and stays hot. Only thing thats a bit of a bummer but not a massive deal is that the hot water and heating cant run at the same time so cold mornings suck to not have the radiator on heating ypur towel 😂😂

suziQ10 · 28/04/2019 19:12

I do. It's great.
Hard water also.

BabyNameQ · 28/04/2019 19:15

We do but have bathroom and en-suite and they can’t be used at the same time. Despite the builder advising of the boiler knowing this, it’s not powerful enough for 2 at the same time and just about powerful for 1. Just make sure the boiler is the right one for your size and use and you should be fine!!!

SimonJT · 28/04/2019 19:16

I do, it’s fab, powerful, easy to get the right temp, our last flat had an electric shower, it was like being spat on the power was that awful.

ThisIsBonIver · 28/04/2019 19:17

Justanother we've had two or three houses with a combi and I am sure that was never and issue. You should have someone look at yours.

PigletJohn · 28/04/2019 19:57

It's normal with a combi. They have a diverter valve which provides heat either to the hot tapwater, or to the radiators. However you would only notice this if you had such a long shower that the radiators had time to go cold.

Foxmuffin · 28/04/2019 19:59

Yes and have in previous properties. It’s fine.

If you are having a new boiler installed, British Gas is likely to be very expensive. I got 3 quotes for mine and went with a reputable local firm as British Gas were over £1,000 more (I also had to have the boiler relocated which added to the cost).

WhyNotMe40 · 28/04/2019 22:01

I hate ours but I think it's undersized.
You can't have a shower if another tap is running, as there is practically no water then. And it stops or goes freezing if someone flushes a loo. So in our household of 5 you have to make sure everyone has urgent wees etc before you shower...

ihatethecold · 28/04/2019 22:08

We have just replaced out combi with an outdoor combi made by Grant.
It’s great. No issues in the shower. My heating is more efficient.

SaveKevin · 28/04/2019 22:14

Ours is crap.
It goes hot, cold, hot, cold. So I just have baths now. Anyone touches a tap and your just stood their being dropped on by moulten lava (water comes out white) or ice.

We rent and I think it’s just the cheapest crappest one

Iggly · 29/04/2019 07:12

That sounds like a problem with your heating system.... none of our combis have ever had that issue.

Figure8 · 29/04/2019 11:10

talia
I've had BG + 2 local respected firms. Only one of those has returned a quote, and it's £1000 More than BG!! I don't think they want the job!
The other hasn't returned a quote. Sigh....

"You can't have a shower if another tap is running, as there is practically no water then"

That is most likely not the fault of the boiler, but the incoming water pipe (or plumbing inside the house) is small and constricts the volume of water that can flow.

Most modern combis can deliver about 12 litres per minute of hot water (the temperature will be higher in summer than in winter) and you might be adding a bit of cold to it.

If the incoming water supply is no greater, then opening another tap will reduce the amount of water available to the shower, and the flow may decrease, and/or the temperature fluctuate.

Some larger combis can deliver a bit more; but they can never deliver at a faster rate than water is received into the house from the main.

Flow is not the same as pressure.

There are a couple of things you can do....

BlueSkiesLies · 29/04/2019 21:30

Yup

It’s amazing but the water pressure reduces if another tap is run. However the temp doesn’t change as I have a thermostatic shower.
