Mortgage Application - Abbey

Just wondered if anyone else is having delays and ahem mishaps with Abbey... or is it, I wonder, our mortgage broker who's leading us up the garden path a bit?

This is the first time we've done sell/buy so we're learning as we go along. Mortgage application submitted Sat 30 June, Mon 9 July it hadn't been actioned. Finally on Weds 11 July got word that mortgage application being processed, survey to be instructed Thurs 12 July.

Thurs 12 July no word of survey. Had conversation with the agent through whom we're buying (they've been tremendously helpful), who rang mortgage broker. Apparently Abbey neglected to instruct the survey? Few words of warning from the agent (with us in collusion) and paperwork actioned by Abbey on Friday; will find out tomorrow if the survey appointment has been requested.

Are any of you having problems with Abbey, or can we start to think we may have a bit of a duff/fob off type mortgage broker?! And will things get easier from now or am I being really truly green?!

hi,

just wanted to respond to your post.

when purchasing one of our properties we decided to go with the abbey as we were told "they were so good and had brilliant rates" we however had no end of hassles, they required so much information and instead of asking for everything all in one go one week it was bank statements then we were told that was it then two weeks later we would get a letter asking for somthing else, it was a very bad experience and after about 8 weeks of faffing around and still no mortgage offer we went elsewhere.

can i suggest you try the mortgage company GMAC we have recently purchased another property and had the mortgage agreed within 2 hours of applying and the survey carrried out 4 days later - superb service!

good luck x

jill, we had v similar experience with Abbey and a mortgage broker some years ago. I honestly cant remember now which of them had neglected to send the papers on.

However, I was fobbed off for several weeks with "we are going to instruct the surveryors in a couple of days"

In the end, I was phoning Abbey every hour, because we would have been homeless if we hadn't completed within the very generous timescale we had allowed them.

a word of warning, they send a couple of hundred pounds too little for the mortgage, so at the final moment, we had to stump up this money ourselves. Solicitor said this is quite common.

That's a long time.

We held off having our survey done until our chain was complete. Are you at the bottom of the chain? It may not be a bad thing that the survey has been delayed.

I hope the rest of your application process goes okay.

Apparently, my mortgage is going to be processed to "offer" stage today. They're bringing people in to work on the backlog over the weekend (my mortgage won't be with the Abbey though)

Hi there,

Thanks for your responses. Thankfully after a LOT of rockets up bottoms, the survey was finally instructed and approval given the same day, paperwork arrived with us two days later.

We are in a chain (we are selling a shared ownership property) but we are now getting very jittery because the draft contract (fixtures/fittings list) has been sent to our buyer's solicitor, has been acknowledged, survey was done, and nothing since - that's 3 weeks ago. The buyer could be on holiday but we just don't know! Putting it frankly, our solicitor will be getting one of our special rockets tomorrow to find out what's going on. We're almost ready to go - some queries raised ref searches, holding off doing the homebuyer survey until our buyer reappears... but getting very jittery and actually quite irked.

We'll get there, by hook or by crook.

But thanks for your messages. Our current mortgage is with Abbey but we were really green when we bought first time round. It's a stressful business but I can't help thinking it so doesn't have to be that way!
