Should I put roman blind inside or outside of the recess?

Want to order a blind online for dd’s room but I can’t decide whether it should go inside or outside of the recess.

I think it will look nice outside as it will frame the window better and show more material but wondering if it will flap at the sides and let the light in?
Planning to order a blackout lining.

Any advice would be welcome please. It’s quite a lot of money for me so don’t want to make a mistake!

We put ours inside the recess (having put one outside the recess elsewhere) and it's better at keeping light out, looks neater too. I think either is fine, just personal preference. Hope that helps!

I actually have all of mine, lounge, bedrooms x 3 outside the frame. No-one that has measured up has said inside the frame for Roman blinds made from a fabric. The other huge advantage is you can put a blackout roller blind inside the recess. This would obviously need to fit.

John Lewis might have some examples ontheir web site. My blinds are lined (except the lounge where they are semi sheer) and they make the windows looked more dressed when outside the frame. Less of a faff if the measurements are a bit off too! There is also less fabric hanging over the glass (well just a few inches) so you get more light in during the day.

Myother blinds are Silhouette and they are designed to go inside the frames. Also, make sure the mechanism is child safe. The metal pull systems are best and last longer. They do not get twisted like cords.

We have changed all our curtains to blinds and we have put them all inside the recess. We also think it looks neater. With Roman blinds we measured the inside of the recess and asked the company to make them to the exact measurements, some companies take too much off for a recess. Our blinds fit the gap perfectly.

If you want to exclude more light, then it's got to be outside the recess. Fitting it inside the recess will NOT cover the sides completely (possibly also the top edge too) because of the fixture brackets holding the horizontal roller bar and the pulley mechanism; and therefore, will allow light from the outside in which destroys the whole purpose of installing the blackout blind in the first place. It's surprising how small amounts of light coming in from the sides can really brighten up the whole room.

I think this might be a personal preferance one OP! Weve just moved from an 'outside recess' house to an 'inside recess' house, much prefer outside, much better at blocking out the light!

SilviaSalmon · 26/04/2019 13:07

Prefer outside here. Blocks out more light when shut and lets in more light when open.

I would also add that my windows are quite wide but not deep. Inside recess woud look silly because the glass exposed would be too small and out of proportion. By hanging them outside, it makes the windows look taller and its better for the room proportions. With much taller windows, and high ceilings, I think there are more options.

Outside the frame looks nicer but with a hidden plain blackout roller from John Lewis behind? I can't stand any chinks of light!

Ok thanks for all the replies, seems it is personal preference. Sounds like outside might suit us better to ensure light is kept out. At the moment she has nothing at the window and is finding it hard to get to sleep with the light evenings so I need to get on with ordering it!

I think it depends on the size of window a small window like the one in the photo needs outside so blind blocks minimum light.
A big window needs inside to stop it flapping around. I have both in my house depending on window size.

Should I put roman blind inside or outside of the recess?
