House prices down South...

Inspired by another thread.

This is the type of question I usually ask my husband, but he has no answer for me!

Why are the house prices down south so ludicrous? I could be completely wrong but it seems like the further south you go the less house you get for your money. It's just crazy how cheap houses seem in Scotland compared to England

I really want to know why!

Erm supply and demand.... more people want to live here!

tenbob · 25/04/2019 21:48

Jobs are better paid and quality of life is (perceived to be) better, so people are prepared to pay more to live south
And even more to live in London.
As Georgie said, just basic supply and demand economics

RandomMess · 25/04/2019 21:51

Some jobs are well paid, many are just NMW or industry standard the same as rest of country.

Supply and demand, foreign investors.

I sound like a simpleton, I know.

I've just never thought about it.

Warmer weather.

Quality of life isnt better down south... northerners have far more disposable income as houses are cheaper... and bigger... and better value.
I think it's because most international buyers bought property to invest in London as it is a major city... lots of empty brand new flats in London... becoming more and more popular in Manchester and Birmingham now too.. hence prices are rising fast in the big northern cities
Btl landlords are buying up north too now as rental yields in London and the south east are so low

PinkCrayon · 25/04/2019 22:53

I have to agree with @Alexalee I moved from the south a few years ago now, The quality of life is alot better where I am now. So much beautiful countryside, barely any traffic, and so much more to do with easy access to it.
Life is much less stressful.
When I go back down south for a visit I cant stand all the traffic and the lack of things to do, takes ages to get anywhere.
Never noticed any difference im wages either.
You can buy much nicer bigger houses where I am in really nice areas which would barely get you a 2 bed semi detached that needed work.
I could never move back.

Certain areas of Cheshire are as expensive as Surrey

BubblesBuddy · 26/04/2019 00:50

You have easy access to work in London from much of the South and London has the best of the UK in many respects so people are drawn to it from all over the world. If they all moved North, your prices would go up! I have miles of countryside near me and 35 minutes to London. Yes, it’s expensive but I don’t want to live in the North. It has nothing I want or need unless I want a mansion. I don’t. However anyone working for the state such as a doctor or a teacher is far better off in the North. Money goes a lot further.

Cafeculture · 26/04/2019 09:35

It's a bit of a generalisation though. Parts of Edinburgh for example are very expensive and properties go for a lot over the asking price. As mentioned, parts of Cheshire are too and I imagine other parts of the north too.

flirtygirl · 26/04/2019 22:05

It's a generalisation as there are cheaper properties in the south. There are also nice and cheap not scary and cheap for a reason. .

Well I can't say that that's my experience, here in rural Devon. Hmm

The south is warmer, drier and lighter. That's worth a lot.

I am leaving my expensive house in Sussex and moving to the Isle of Wight where I can get a house for £70 less and finally pay off my stupid mortgage before I retire. I am pissed off about being stuck on a small island with a ferry though.

userxx · 26/04/2019 22:19

Why would you move to save £70, seems a bit extreme.
