Hello. DH is going to relocate in the next few months to a business in the Trafford Park area. I don’t want to move at all from our beautiful mid Wales location. But needs must.
Which area can we relocate to that is commutable to this area while retaining a village like feel to a semi urban area? Our budget is shite at £250k as I’m semi retired and can’t contribute too much to he move.

Trafford is lovely but mostly expensive. You don’t say what size house you need but you could get a decent size 2 bed house in Altrincham for 250k.

If you want villagey feel then the areas around Saddleworth are nice - Uppermill etc. Might be a bit far to commute though. Lymm is also nice, near Warrington but I think it’s quite expensive.

Must add this mortgage free so could go abit extra if a short term mortgage is needed to get what we want.

Son is grown up so a two bed is fine for visiting requirements.

it's tricky without having a crap commute....probably too urban for you but Ashton on Mersey in sale is on the edge of green space near the river Mersey and has a kind of village centre. further south is oldfield Brow on the edge of Altrincham....its a bit of a social mix tbh but has a very green feel and close to beautiful dunham park and massey. You would probably enjoy the eastern side of Manchester more on the edge of the penines and Peak district but would be an awful commute.

That’s a thought, the areas south of Stockport are very villagey but still on the train line. Disley and further south, past Lyme Park (different from Lymm, which is near Warrington). Commute wouldn’t be great if he has to be in the office 5 days a week but doable if he can work from home and has a bit off flexi time.

Timperley? Worsley? More likely to get something for your budget in Timperley.

Trafford really isn't villagey though! If my kids weren't in secondary I'd move to Wales or the village I grew up in in Hants!

You could look at Bowdon Vale - not the most desirable of areas but edge of the countryside and easy access to motorway. You're also right near Bowdon proper and Hale, both of which are very naice.

What about urmston or flixton, not far from Trafford park.

Ivy44 · 27/04/2019 12:56

Urmston town centre is nice now. Good book shop and some nice cafes. Direct train to both Manchester and Liverpool. Not very villagey though!

united4ever · 27/04/2019 14:39

Most of these suggestions are urban villages though....certainly not what comes to mind when I think of the word village. Though Lymm is quite a good shout though even that has quite a bit of sprawl on the edge getting bigger every year but the little centre is very cute.

Murinae · 27/04/2019 14:56

My Mum lives in Urmston and it’s quite nice though not very village like! Traffic around Trafford is also awful. Lymm is really expensive.

The tram line is currently being expanded to run through Trafford park. It might open up your options if you can identify a park and ride that would work.
