Replacing dated brass door furniture and switches /sockets

Our house is about 25 years old and was fitted out with very traditional brass internal door handles and "posh" light switch plates and sockets in decorative brass effect.
25 years on, most of the handles are scratched and discoloured and the light switches look very dated.

I plan to replace all the handles at once, (pretty easy diy job) and the switches and sockets as we decorate each room, but might buy all the switches I need now so that I have enough matching ones to do whole house even if if takes 3 years.

I like either brushed stainless steel effect or satin chrome.
Which you you think would look best?
And for the switches, black or white rocker switches or pay a premium for rocker switches in the matching metal?

I’m replacing mine to brass - the rocker switches are lovely but uncertain if they’ll stand the test of time with heavy handed dc.

I like the black fittings too and will be using those in a few rooms but prefer the brass mostly.

I’m not a fan of chrome but it’s difficult to avoid as it’s everywhere!

We've replaced in each room as we have redecorated and have gone for brushed steel switches on brushed steel plates. Simple and subtle. Most of the switches in this house were white plastic with plastic brass effect or brass covers over them. But then it was last touched in the 80s.

I wouldn't rush to make the change; suddenly I am seeing much more brass and bronze in interior design styles. (I've been obsessing over kitchens since new year, and I've seen thousands of articles and pictures in the course of this project.) I have solid brass door and window furniture everywhere, and after hating it for ages, I'm softening and changing my mind. I am staying with white sockets too, but in a modern shape with USB ports.

Go with what you want but as pp said, brass is on the return in terms of trends.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 24/04/2019 16:34

Ha! I've always said that the moment I finally decide to follow a trend (stainless Steel door furniture) it will go out.
I could single handedly kill off the trend for grey if I wanted!

I actually prefer the white plastic ones as they blend into the walls (which are mostly white or pale) and don't particularly want to emphasise switches or plug sockets.

I’m a subtle whit me switch plate fan too!

I would replace with brass if you're not keen on the ones you have. Our house has brass handles which I meant to replace but I left it so long they've come back into fashion!

thecatsthecats · 25/04/2019 13:14

Oof, I'll have them.

There's lots of brushed steel in my house that I wish would fuck off, since the house is Victorian.

LeatherFace · 25/04/2019 15:34

You can get flush white metal ones which are really nice, feel great quality.

userxx · 25/04/2019 16:43

I like dark nickel switches, look fab against white walls.

bebeboeuf · 25/04/2019 16:49

We changed ours to just clean white plastic.
Any original Victorian handles have been left (they don’t seem to scratch or damage like the 80’s brass handles do)

Not a fan of the stainless steel or chrome equivalents
