Kitchen asymmetry help!!

Gah! I'm nearly there with planning the new kitchen, which seems to have taken forever...

Finally got all the elements I want where I want them, but the sink (in the island) and extractor fan are not aligned and I'm worried the asymmetry will drive me mad? Or is it not a big deal/not that noticeable?

I have tried shifting the island down a bit, but that means it will be a squeeze getting round the dining table (currently there is 1m between the end of the island and the dining table and don't really want less than that). Also leaves a strangely large gap up the top end of the room which is redundant.

Also tried offsetting the sink but that gives rise to even more troubling asymmetry both with the units in the island (currently matching wide pan drawers either side, which I am desperate to keep) and also with the pendants.

Help!!!

I doubt you will notice as you'll have your back to the sink when using the hob and vice versa when using the sink. We have a very similar set and I couldn't tell you whether the two line up. I wouldn't mess with the layout if they didn't because we need space for bar stools to be pulled out, doors to be opened.

What's the line green thing on the island?

Have you got a separate utility room as there's no much storage shown on your plan?

We also have very similar layout and I have no idea whether they line up! You don't really see it or look at it that way. Symmetry of the sink within the island would be much more important to me.

Thanks both that's really reassuring!

@wowfudge we have 4 tall units that come out white in this for some reason so can't really be seen, and shallow units on the back of the island too...it's more than double what we have in our current kitchen so it should be fine for our needs 😊

The green thing on the island is a plant-I got a bit carried away on roomsketcher!!

🤣

Where are you getting your kitchen from?

You may find that it gets changed a bit depending on the supply company anyway.

But to answer your question, it would drive me insane on paper, I don’t actually think you’ll ‘see’ that on the real kitchen because it’s not how you view the kitchen. The island is separate. It’s not like not having the hob centered over an undercounter oven. Hope that makes some sense?

Just being nosy, why did you go for the sink in the island? Lots of people do and it’s all personal choice obviously, but it would drive me nuts, I’d rather have the island free of a sink or hob, just a clear surface.

squeezeoflemon · 28/04/2019 18:09

Thanks @IncrediblySadToo I'm relieved that this is the consensus! Your point makes total sense 😊

I'm getting the kitchen from handmade kitchens of Christchurch and have been through the plan with them (they made some good suggestions which I have already incorporated into this version) however I realised subsequently that the alignment had not been mentioned...hence the slight panic!

I wanted to have either the sink or the hob on the island and decided on the sink because I don't like any of the extractor hood options for the hob...also I'm not a particularly brilliant cook so not expecting to spend hours slaving over the hob with my back to everyone (although I'm hoping my enthusiasm for cooking will improve once I have a lovely kitchen!) I am also quite picky about not allowing a build up of dishes so hoping the sink on the island won't lead to visible mess 😊

I can understand the ‘slight panic’ 😖🤣.

Are you happy with the gap between the end of the island and the table when there’s a chair there? What about when someone is sitting there? Have you tried that out ‘in person’. Or doesn’t it matter if you can’t get through?

I think I must be the ‘abnormal’ one, I just can’t see the appeal of a sink or hob on an island - it just seems ‘messy’ and I’d rather have it clear. But given a huge percentage of people do it and kitchen showrooms & designers are full of them, I’ll concede to being the ‘odd one out’ in just wanting a clear surface 🤣

What colour are your cabinets?

Do you have any comparison quotes? I’m doing my kitchen too and was wondering how they compare to other companies?

IncrediblySadToo · 28/04/2019 22:27

I looked at them a while ago but I can’t remember why I discounted them now? I’ll go and have another look.

IncrediblySadToo · 28/04/2019 22:34

They’re all Shaker and I’m looking for slab doors. Easy enough you’d think, but I don’t like any of the ones I’ve seen 😖
