What do I need for a house with no hallway?

Typical Victorian cottage where the door opens straight into the front room.

It’s a small cottage, 2 up 2 down and at the moment a sofa and armchair are situated int he front room.

The sofa right in front of where the door opens (about 4 foot away once door is shut)
And the armchair to the left inside the bay window.

I have a wall mounted coat hook rack for the wall which we haven’t put up yet, and there is a small side table next to the sofa

Is there anything we could do to improve this as an entry space even though there’s not a lot of available space to use?

Do you have a cupboard under the stairs? We used to have a house like this and used that to store coats etc otherwise it would look rather messy. Have you moved in yet or is it a new house? If not moved in yet, think about what it'll be like sitting on the sofa in the evening watching tv...you won't want to feel like you're in the entranceway amid coats and shoes etc so try to keep them out of the way if you can.
I adored our little Victorian cottage, they are so homely and full of charm 😊

I had a room divider when I lived in a terrace like that - just a narrow open shelving unit at right angles to the front door.

I agree with squeezeoflemon, put the coats under the stairs. We have an ikea rack under ours so can hang our coats on coat hangers to save space (also a lower row of hooks for the dds).

Once we no longer needed a large entrance space as we no longer used a pushchair we put a sofa directly in front of you as you walk in the door - it is a bit of a pain to get in the house (you need to open the door wide to get past and then close it, so guests who don't know to come right in helpfully stand in the way of the door so you can't close it...), but once you are in/the door is closed it maximises space.

This is the closest to what we have, although ours is wall-mounted. We are lucky with our under stairs cupboard though - although most of it is to the left of the cupboard door, there is space to the right of the door for our coat rack.

Sorry for lack of clicky link - can't make it work today...

These could be an idea to give you some separation from the door if hung from the ceiling at right angles to it. There are cheaper, very similar options out there too (but not acoustic).

We had sofa along wall facing fireplace and one in the bay window. Little table by the door for keys, post etc.
We had cupboards fitted under the stairs for coats, shoes etc as really didn't want coats hanging in the living room. We do tend to have shoes lurking there though.
One thing we did have to ditch pretty quickly was the rug /carpet in the living room - it got so gritty from constant footfall. Now we have lovely bare boards and some smaller rugs but leaving boards between front door and door between living and dining rooms.

Thanks for this post OP. I'm in the process of buying a similar house and am already wondering how I'm going to arrange furniture etc.

I'm downsizing from a 4-bed to a 2-bed (through choice) and I've de-cluttered massively but I know that every inch is going to have to be used carefully.

I'm also planning to have a cupboard fitted under the stairs to store coats, vacuum cleaner etc. My house is open-plan which I'm still trying to get my head round in such an old, small house but I'm hoping I'll get used to that.

This has definitely given me lots of thought.
I do prefer an uncluttered look so will need to be strict on shoes left at front door.
We will build in a cupboard for the stairs to house shoes.

I love small house living in general and it does keep me from buying things I don’t really need as I always consider the space available.
