American vs French Fridge freezers

Anyone got a preference?

We'd assumed we go for an 'American' style one (vertical split) but looking at the freezer sections, although the capacity is nominally quite good, it seems to me that as the shelves are so narrow, you probably couldn't actually store much without it all falling off the shelves.
The horizontal split 'French' ones might therefore seem a better bet for volume, but I've always considered deep drawers less easy to find items.

Thoughts?

We replaced an American one with a French one which I prefer...largely because I like the big double fridge section

We have a French style one which I absolutely love. Its this one. Weve had it 5 years and it is still perfect. Freezer is very easy to use and the drawers are exactly the right depth.

sorry link fail!

We’ve just bought a side by side fridge and freezer, you get the look of an American style one but much more space and wide shelves in the freezer. It is a bit wider though with each appliance 60cm wide.

If you might need a large item - frozen leg of lamb, a chicken or turkey, a bag of Yorkshire puds - then check the size of compartments very carefully. And think about what you use most - we ruled out most fridges as you couldn't store 9 milk bottles in the door.

American style ones might look lovely, but have a small freezer capacity. We're having our kitchen done at the moment, and I'm going for a side-by-side freestanding fridge and freezer. Each is 59.5cm wide, and so a better capacity for the freezer,

I've got American-style & the freezer holds masses (but then I previously had a small under-counter freezer - that was tiny!)

It has a decent amount of door storage, & I also use some baskets to stop smaller things falling out.

Or have 2 x fridge freezers next to each other with the door openings like the American ones?

MySecondBestBroomstick · 22/04/2019 20:42

I wondered what the word was for the fridge over freezer drawer style.

That appeals to me more because it seems more pizza friendly. I assume you can get a pizza in a side by side somehow though.

GreenShadow · 22/04/2019 20:52

Good point SecondBest Broomstick. Not sure a pizza would fit in most American ones.

Thanks for all your comments everyone else. We prefer the look of the American but think we will probably go for a French for practicality. Unfortunately that will mean another trip to Currys to see what's on offer.

We have a French one like Anchovies12 but the freezer has French doors as well.

It's bloody amazing and holds so much!

I can confirm pizzas fit in our freezer Smile

Ours is American - love the fridge cos that bit's huge but the freezer part is compact really when you factor in the space the ice maker takes out of it etc. We manage fine because we have a chest freezer as well so I tend to run the American one as a "working freezer" with things like frozen veg and stuff in for ongoing cooking requirements and then use the chest freezer as a longer term store.

I deliberately chose one without ice/water dispenser - no plumbing, more space inside, & cheaper Grin

It holds masses!

We went for an Anerican style fridge freezer without the water cooler/ice dispenser as they take up so much room from the freezer compartment. We found the best measure to look at was the volume of each compartment rather than the size of the unit. We eventually went for a Haier HRF800DGS7, its massive at 1m wide, plenty of room inside, pizzas fit in the door pockets of the freezer compartment.

The ONLY problem we didn't forsee was having to take the door frame out to get the thing into the kitchen. Check the width of your doors before ordering any of these types as ours is not the widest available.
