Villages around Cambridge?

Kaelle2 · 22/04/2019 10:33

Single prof mum, working betw London and Cambridge, seeking nice 3-4 bed house w garden in a welcoming village. All girls are “mostly” out of the house! Quick access to station a must, but not necessarily from Cambridge itself.

Ely? More of a small town than a city. There’s a station and you can be in Cambridge in 15 mins, London in 60-70 mins. Much cheaper than Cambridge, friendly, lots of green space, restaurants, cinema etc.

Puffinhead · 22/04/2019 18:34

Waterbeach, Great Chesterfield, Foxton, Shelford...all have stations. have a look at villages along your train route. West Wickham is miles from anywhere. North of Cambridge will generally be cheaper than south.

Puffinhead · 22/04/2019 18:35

Meant to say, those villages I mentioned all have trains into Cambridge and London.

ihatethecold · 22/04/2019 18:38

what is your budget op?

Kaelle2 · 22/04/2019 23:05

Today, DD and I spent the day in and around Cambridge. Saw Ely and thought it was nice, Waterbeach too, and Milton. Looked down streets in N Cambridge which seem a good option. Adored the cute terraced houses Riverside! Felt spoiled for choice w a great lunch in Cambridge itself. I’ve got a quite decent budget, but don’t want a huge thing. Little bijoux in a great friendly neighbourhood. Liked Huntingdon, but whizzed through. However, rail links are more complicated having to use the City’s station. So thanks to you all. Further detail much appreciated ( please can someone tell me how I can reference each of you in my reply??? Is it a hastag? What makes it go bold)

Milton is fantastic. Great country park, park and ride into the city centre for the train or there will be a train station coming soon. Definitely worth a look if your budget allows.

@kaelle2 if you type @username you can tag people. Glad you had a lovely visit Smile

Avoid Huntongdon, it really isnt very nice.

If you want villages rather than Cambridge itself then I would go for Whittlesford Duxford or Shelford if you want the Liverpool Street line, or Foxton or Meldreth if you want the Kings X line.

ihatethecold · 23/04/2019 18:16

The issue with Milton is the smell of the recycling centre can waft over.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 23/04/2019 18:33

you could also consider st neot's which has it's own station and is a nice market town

Kaelle · 23/04/2019 21:48

Thanks to all of you: @sleepismysuperpower1, @Raspberry10, @Puffinhead, @ihatethecold, @WattdeEll, and @EmmaGrundyForPM

Great Stuff. I will go back and have a look at StNeot's @sleepismysuperpower1. @EmmaGrundyForPM, I did see some nice areas in Cambridge itself so will try to focus on those next time. It's just hard to figure out what might be more social. I have two terriers, so good dog walking is great for social intros, right? I also haven't even given the other two villages a thought, so will check those out. Other than where the terminus stations end up, is there any line into London which is better, more frequent? (I could also just look it up myself, but opinions matter...) And out of curiosity, why is Huntingdon not nice? If South of Cambridge is "nicer" than North, than what's better? I promise you I won't bend your ear much longer. I've signed up with some agents so they should do their job too. But of course they're biased according to the houses they have on their books... Thanks again to you all. Smile

Puffinhead · 23/04/2019 22:04

You’re welcome. I think the North/South thing is the proximity to London (particularly the train services from the villages) and/or Addenbrookes.

pinkcardi · 23/04/2019 22:14

Huntingdon is ok, but I think there are nicer places. It's just a bit too far, personally, on the train into London and the A14 is currently shocking (although this is improving) The inner town itself is historical but congested to get around.

St Neots is fine if commuting but if you're looking to meet people and settle into a community I'd look at villages outside it, or some of the villages PPs have suggested south of Cambridge. St Neots is ok but not hugely charming, and it also has traffic issues with the A14 being clogged up and the A428 awaiting its upgrade.

Mummyshark2018 · 23/04/2019 22:14

Cambridge north station (Chesterton) is better for getting into London as you're guaranteed a seat. It's only a few minutes extra beyond Cambridge. Chesterton is also close to the river for excellent dog walks.

We live in a village west of Cambridge. Dh works in London a couple of times a week and drives to St Neots or Royston both of which have good services to Kings X .

I've lived in 2 villages in South Cambs and both have been very sociable. Our priorities when choosing a village were the primary school, especially important that we could walk to it, then other things like if theres a village shop. In the village were currently in, the village shop is a real hub in the community. I work ft so dont use it during the week but when I'm in there on a Saturday morning I meet half the village in there.

For me, I love having more space than we could afford in Cambridge but also having eay access into the city in the evening to access films, plays, etc.

ihatethecold · 24/04/2019 06:28

Waves to Emma. 👋🏼
I love living west of Cambridge. Fantastic schools and very friendly. My DH commutes to London from Royston everyday. We are 12-15 mins north of there.
Did you say you have kids op?

ihatethecold · 24/04/2019 06:29

North of Cambridge Lao has nice villages.
I know people in Willingham and I always think it’s a very well served village.

Also live West of Cambridge villages. Can't really fault this area for accessibility. Good bike and bus routes into town, and easy access to St Neots and Royston Stations, both of which have fast trains to London (St Neots quickest is 38 mins to Kings X)
