Hey guys,

Long time lurker here but decided to make an account finally smile

But anyway, these parasol things seem to be the in thing lately and lots of my neighbours have started putting theres up, just wondering if anyone has any experience or recommendations with them?

Seem quite pricey though so don't want to end up wasting money!

They look good and provide a decent amount of shade (usually around 3m wide) but they are not great on a windy day. They have a tendency to take off down the garden like a kite. Obviously all parasols will suffer in the wind but the free standing ones can be a nightmare even when weighted down at the base. The old fashioned type which fits into a hole in the table tend to be a bit less of a flight risk!
We now have a crank and tilt parasol - it fits in the table but can be angled as the sun changes. Similar to this:

We had one in a table and it pulled the table over one day! Obviously these cannot be positioned anywhere else than in the table.

We have several freestanding around our pool and they can topple over on windy days. The cantilever one (M&S I think) is generally fine and easy to wind down when windy. It has a massive base. The only slight problem is cleaning and storage. It tall and it’s a big unit. However it’s the best we have had and shades a decent area.

We have the ikea seglaro, and I'd recommend it. It's never come close to toppling over for us, as it's not only weighted down with paving slabs - we've added some massive rocks that were dug out of the garden when we were having a retaining wall built. It's not budged!

Alices garden have nice ones

We have one, cost fifty quid off the internet.
It’s fixed to a concreted-in slab on the stone steps, and provides shade to area of patio where the garden furniture is. We tie a light rope to the corner of the ‘umbrella’ and a bracket on the house wall if it is a breezy day. It works really well for us, but that’s because of the design of the main seating area of our garden.

Hi Mejulie.

Pretty sure you've had enough help already from the guys n gals on here.

There's loads of info around and reviews on Amazon but you can try this link if it's allowed.

As mentioned above, you can get shade for 3m and I think they go right up to 5m which is massive.

Enjoy the summer
Shaun

Love mine!

Would recommend a parasol cover. Ours stays outside all year and the cover has kept it pristine (photo) - 3 years old and looks new.

We also have concrete weights we put on the base - very successfully keeps everything in place. Happy to report that our parasol has never moved! Please excuse dusty and dirty patio in photo.

We have this and I love it! 3rd summer now and it's the best garden money we've ever spent.

They are brilliant. Ours is freestanding and heavily wighted down by sandbags - if it was very windy i woukd just put it down. I noticed next have one for £110 which is a good price - i bought mine end of last summer off ebay at a good sale price as some are quite expensive. My first one was from cargo home and cost about £100 and lasted years.
