What to do before we re-plaster and paint???

Hi Mumsnetters
I’m after your advice/tales of own experience as to things we need to consider when we a planning a full re-plaster...
We are buying a house in need of a fair amount of decorating (they have lots of lining paper, knocks on woodwork etc)
We thought about getting it stripped back, replastered, new skirting boards and door architraves then painting throughout.
What else should we consider at this point - ie. speaker cabling, more sockets, lights?
What needs/is much better done now??
And finally, do you think we can preserve the carpets and hard floors currently in place with all this going on?

It's a good idea to think about putting in more sockets, especially in an older house. We had one socket in each room when we moved in... The best way to preserve the carpets would be to lift them and store somewhere until you get the room back to rights; plastering can be a dusty, mucky job. Your hard floors should be covered up while the work is in progress, but will need a good scrub, or two, afterwards.
Good luck - it will all be worth it.

If you want to keep the carpets Id remove them as said above. We had our lounge replastered and the mess...! (we didn't want to keep the carpet!). We had new sockets put in and new skirting boards.

How old is it? Does it need a rewire - if do do that now before the plastering/decorating.

buy a canister builders' vac

And lock away your domestic hoover.

Insulate your roof space to the max before you make your walls and woodwork all nice - it can be messy if the previous owners used carpet for insulation....

"carpet for insulation...."

moth factory.

Figure out where you are going to put any hifi, wall hung TVs, speakers and make sure the sockets/wiring is in for all likely positions.

If you are going to get new Freesat/Sat TV or need an aerial, get that fitted and recessed.

Add lots more sockets.

Decide whether you want a catflap in a wall, rather than a door and get the tunnel fitted.

What is your central heating system/boiler like agewise? Are you happy with the position of radiators?

If you do have some rooms that don't need plastering you might save yourselves a lot of hoovering by taping thin plastic decorators over the door and adding a draught excluder at the base.

If you are planning to keep the carpets in situ make sure the plasterers/electricians/plumbers know this.

I wouldn’t worry about speaker wiring as most of that it Bluetooth now!

Thanks all!!
Any views on rooms with halogens for lighting versus pendants?? Has anyone got a mix of the two??
