Good for family, plenty to do, friendly, good schools and transport links?

How far/ travel time do you need

Transport in York is a total utter nightmare so you may be looking at commuting to park and rides unless you locate near the railway stations and train it in

treasuredtartans · 14/04/2019 12:21

Thanks was thinking no further than 20 mins away from York.

It’s small, so anywhere has lots to do because everywhere’s close to town. Fulford, Bootham/Clifton Green, the Mount and Dringhouses are probably the nicest areas.

The best schools are subjective, but Fulford, All Saints, Huntington and Archbishop Holgate’s are all generally considered very good. Plus there are several independents (The Mount, Bootham and St Peter’s are all city centre).

Depends on what part of York you'll be working in. Crossing town is the nightmare (despite it being a small city) as traffic is funnelled down a few narrow roads so if you work on the west side of the city centre you'd be better off looking at Holgate/Acomb than Heworth or Huntington for example. If you're working on the south side then you would consider Bishopthorpe or Bishopthorpe Rd over Poppleton. Further out there are some lovely villages and you get more for your money the closer to Selby you get.

Park and Rides are generally good and cheaper than the service buses, and there are also good cycle paths which are well used. It's a beautiful city and a great place to raise a family but can be expensive. Houses are generally higher in York than other northern towns but I think the quality of life is probably why.

It also depends massively in your budget. You are locating into the "Golden Triangle" and prices whilst vary do tend to be somewhat expensive

I grew up in Fulford would recommend it, families children have attended Schools in Fulford and All Saints which are both good.

Heworth and Huntingdon also nice areas to live,

We have family living on both sides of the city and I have to say it's a nightmare getting between their houses! It seems to take forever. Driving round York is a fucking nightmare!

MarieG10 · 15/04/2019 13:30

If you need to get across York then buy a bike. I've just driven through....and yes is a fucking nightmare!

Some of the villages just outside the city are worth a look, and have great community feel and good transport links, Dunnington, Poppleton, Bishopthorpe are all popular.

It would definitely depend on where in York you need to get to as the morning commute can be a bit of a pain

Acomb is a really good choice as it's still relatively affordable compared to most other areas, there's big houses with larger than average gardens for York and it's a really short drive in to the city, with supermarkets and lots of facilities (gyms, libraries, supermarkets, etc)

To the north you could try Huntington which again has bigger plots than a lot of areas and is an easy journey in to town, but just always beware of flooding and check your home will not be affected!!! V important!!! (Another plus for Acomb actually)
