Hi Andrea, just curious if you did move to Blyth as I'm looking to move there right now only not too sure of the area.

Blyth in Northumberland? You can look up the crime statistics but it is a very deprived area with big drug problems. However just like every town there are nicer parts to

Some areas of Blyth are lovely, and some areas are very dodgy! One of the main problems is traffic congestion getting in and out at rush hour, there's talk of a relief road being built at some point though. Feel free to message me and i'll help if i can :) New railway coming to the town in the next year or two and the town centre is being improved, beach is lovely, overall some parts of Blyth are lovely and the house prices are fantastic!

Resurrecting this thread (sorry!) as Blyth has made my shortlist of places to move to in the North East. Would love to know if OP made the move or hear from anyone else who lives there.
I understand it has a bad rep, historically, but also there is regeneration and a rail line coming which I hope would improve things?

Appeal for me: beach (I enjoy sea swimming and would hope to meet people this way, plus could take up paddle boarding!); affordable housing (budget of £250k for a 4 bed with a garage); accessibility to Newcastle (have teens who will want fun, education, jobs, shopping).

Our options, due to budget, are really between Blyth or similar nearby areas, or County Durham looking at Chester-le-St, Durham villages/outskirts, Bishop Auckland, Consett etc. Can't afford Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, Gosforth, Lanchester and all the 'lovely' areas people always mention on here!

Need a secondary school with 6th form for DD who will be going into year 10 when we aim to move.

Can I ask the area you are moving from? Blyth does have a bad rep but then there are nice parts just like any other town. The nicest town around this area is probably Morpeth but house prices are horrendous, I live in one of the neighbouring towns and I am moving to a nicer part soon

@mitsandscarf moving from the South East of England. I've lived in Wales and ROI as well, but don't fancy either. Fancy a change and can't buy a house where we are or near enough to commute so might as well go big!

I'm not a snob, and to be fair there are several drug dealers in our beautiful Sussex village, so I don't mind a bit rough but obviously want to feel safe and hopefully make friends with my neighbours.

Morpeth does appear to be out of our price range. We need 4 beds and a garage/workshop (for all DH's and DS2's bikes/hobbies) and budget is £220k (it was £250k until interest rates went up!). So I know we won't be able to live in the nicest areas. That's fine, I just really, really want to own a house and stop living in an overcrowded, falling apart, mouldy rental. Also living somewhere the DCs can afford to leave home would be good.
