Anyone used top boxes on top of wall units so wall units can reach till ceiling

Looking at diy-kitchens. I would like wall units till ceiling but 900mm ones will leave a gap even after cornice. If I add a top box over 720mm one, it will reach ceiling. But I can't find any pictures in customer kitchens so don't know how will it look.
Anyone done that or seen any online pic.

How wide is the gap to the ceiling if you get the 900mm ones? I didn't want to ever have to clean the tops of cabinets again so when we installed the new kitchen 3-4 years ago, we got the builder to box in the gap. Something to consider?

Here're the photos of kitchen and utility room.

Thank you 242mummy. It looks so well fitted with the boxing in.

The gap with 900mm cabinet is around 300mm.

We are doing the same as 242mummy as the units weren't quite tall enough.
Can i ask what kitchen you have @242mummy ?

It's from the Schuller Next125 range - matt crystal grey with frosted glass veneer on the doors. The tall units come in different heights plus Schuller also offer various plinth sizes so the kitchen is made-to-measure as far as it can be, in a German factory!

The height of the gap in my kitchen is approx 20cm, to give perspective.

If you have 900mm wall cabinets (I do) then you won't be able to reach the top shelf. You can get pull-down shelves (you'll need the double one) and some kitchen steps.

Anything above that you'll never use. You can have a top-hinged flap for neatness if you want, you can match it to the cabinets or decorate it to match the walls. Don't put anything up there that anybody will ever want.

It's a good place for a ventilation or extractor hood duct.

My kitchen is small, so top shelves will be used for buy 1 get 1 sort of extra grocery and cleaning materials, extra plates cups etc. Currently all such things I store in garage which is a long walk around house from kichen.

I already have a stool in kitchen to reach over to top deep shelf. If I could get extra cabinets added, I will use it but I don't want to ruin the look of my new kitchen.

We did this, see pic attached. We use them for vases and occasional glasses, we also in the extraction duct through the back of the ones above the wall units.

Thank you very much. I can visualize it now. From your photos looks like key is either handleless or discreet knobs.

averythinline,
What is size of wall cabinets that you used.

the big cabinets were 900900 and the top ones 900360 mm range stanbury - so smooth finish shaker...

Hotterthanahotthing · 16/04/2019 11:33

I want to do this but I'm thinking standard sized cabinets and a shelf underneath.I have a tiny kitchen too and it doesn't worry me that little used things will be out of reach but I would like my worktops clear.

you can get cabinets any size you want, but start by seeing what size of doors are available in your chosen range. This may be a restricting factor. You can hide a few inches gap with cornice or pelmet if it is available to match (also depends on the range) or paint it to match the ceiling or wall.
