Indoor Swimming Pool

Hi, hoping someone can advise. We’ve been looking to buy a house for weekends/holidays, and are scheduled to view one next week that has an indoor swimming pool. That wasn’t a feature we were looking for, although it would be a huge bonus. However, I want to check if there would be additional costs involved that I might not foresee? Anyone have one? It’s indoor and heated...

If it's indoor and heated - ask for an idea of the running costs. Depending on the size and depth this could be anywhere between £100 and £1000 a month !!!!

It would be lovely but I'd be concerned about running costs and maintenance

itsinchicago · 10/04/2019 17:53

Who would maintain it when you aren't there?

Penguinpandarabbit · 10/04/2019 18:10

Would love on but would imagine running costs could be high and also you would need to ensure blocked off from small children so no risk of drowning. I would be seriously jealous of you 😂

@humptynumpty - how do high?? Shock

@penguin, it’s in it’s own room, with a door, so I thought that would be ok in terms of blocking it off (and we’ve been v unsuccessfully TTC so I may have got to the ‘fuck it, I want to do something cool’ stage...

We moved into a house with an indoor pool last sept and initially thought it was great for our toddler....roll on 2 months later and a £600 per month gas/elec bill we decided to turn off the heater, run the pumps to circulate the water for just an hour overnight and not use!
It may get a couple of months use in
The summer when it should heat naturally and stay warmer but we're in the process of getting quotes to fill it in! I'm now busy planning my new kitchen / family room Grin

My in laws have one and pay a company to come out each week to maintain it - I’m
Sure you could do much of this yourself - testing water quality and adjusting, maintaining plant equipment etc if you learned how and are there enough - And the cost of keeping it heated when you aren’t there as it will take a long time to get up
To temperature if you let it drop

You would need a planned maintenance contract. There are requirements for chemical dosing which should be done by someone qualified unless you want to risk accidentally making mustard gas, filters have to be changed and checked. Pumps have to run daily.

Unfortunately these things have to be done even if the pool isn’t being used, this is why you only really hear of pools in private estates which have onsite staff. Then there is the long term replacement and maintenance costs for the liner and pumps etc. Good beginners guide here to what is involved.

You can do the chemicals yourself. Most people do. It's really not rocket science. Running costs depend on how it's being heated. You need to ask to see the current utility bills. Don't take anyone's word! Pools are not cheap but they are lovely.

Thanks everyone, that’s really helpful. And you may have (very sensibly) burst my little excited bubble. I’d much rather know now though. @blewbird - great idea, and how well/badly they respond to that request will probably tell me quite a lot. @ketchup - very helpful link thank you!

We have a hot tub and find the window mechanisms in room are dusting dreadfully. And the water evaporates very quickly, even with the cover on.

Glitteryfrog · 10/04/2019 22:33

How big is it? Is it actually a useable size... more than a giant bath?

How often do you plan to be at the house? You'll have to do some maintenance even when you're not there, it'll go stagnant very quickly.
I'd install an endless pool pump and use it daily!
