Cost of Replacement Windows/ Doors

LookingOptimistic · 05/04/2019 15:09

We are looking to replace all windows/ doors on our 4 bed detached house (8 x windows, front door, back door, patio door) and have one quote from Everest which seem extortionate compared with websites online which quoted cost for each standard UPVC unit.

Has anyone replaced this many before and how much did you pay? where you are in the country might make a difference too.

I use a local company who make and fit the windows. I had a load done in 2014 as I needed to sort the house prior to reletting, and it was sub £4k.

They've just done one window for me and it was about £400, and the price didn't increase when I rang up to have it as tilt and turn.

RedPandaFluff · 05/04/2019 15:26

@LookingOptimistic we recently got quotes for a very similar house to yours; Everest were most expensive at £14k and a local firm quoted £6.5k, with a range in between. The most expensive local firm quoted £8.5k.

RedPandaFluff · 05/04/2019 15:26

Oh and we're in the North-West of England.

TyrionsNextWife · 05/04/2019 15:27

I paid £5k to a local company for 2 composite doors, 4 normal sized windows and a huge picture window. The windows were a non-standard colour which added approx 10% to the cost.

I had 4 other quotes from national companies and they all came in between £9k and £12k Shock

LookingOptimistic · 05/04/2019 15:27

@scaryteacher Ah ok, so do you think the big companies like Everest/ Safe Style UK, Anglian Homes try to take you for a ride? because it seems their costs are so far above anything else that its like they make it up!

I think I will ask around for local ones like you mentioned, perhaps il get a more reasonable quote.

Thanks @TyrionsNextWife @RedPandaFluff

I was just quoted £23k by Everest! I just couldn't believe it. Did the local companies you used offer credit/ loan payment plans? and what sort of deposit did you give? unless you paid for them outright?

Local firm £5k. All other firms double the quote. Definitely get a few quotes.

Seniorschoolmum · 05/04/2019 15:31

I had 10 double windows, one single window plus a pair of narrow French windows, Aa-rated, made & installed by a small local co. for £5,900.
It took them 3 days to install them. I’m in Hampshire.

LookingOptimistic · 05/04/2019 15:32

@Seniorschoolmum I am in Hampshire too, which company?

MRB Windows based near Kingsclere. The owner is a nice man called Martin and he works with his two sons.

They cleaned & tidied up after themselves too.

CottonSock · 05/04/2019 15:36

Everest are never welcome in my house again. I think they quoted 25k. A joiner did it for 8

LookingOptimistic · 05/04/2019 15:48

@CottonSock Probably much the same problem I have had with them then, I have just asked a local company to come and quote and surveyor is going to call to arrange quote visit.

The person from the local company even quoted on another recent job that Everest quoted first; as customer sent the Everest quote to the local company to show them, and they just couldn't believe how expensive they were for no reason.

Springiscomingsoon · 05/04/2019 15:51

I've heard Everest are expensive. Ask on your local Facebook page for recommendations (I don't like Facebook, but great for these things). Look for companies that have been around for a long time too.

TyrionsNextWife · 05/04/2019 16:01

I paid £2.5k when I placed the order and booked fitting dates, then I paid the balance after the work was finished. It was a pretty hefty deposit but I paid on a credit card so I’d have some extra protection.

I don’t know if they offered loans or anything, but I think it’s getting more common with smaller companies to have an arrangement with a credit company.

LookingOptimistic · 05/04/2019 16:02

@TyrionsNextWife Thanks.

I suppose its not much of an issue, as I could just get a home improvement loan independently if they company don't have anything.

Tesco credit card are doing a balance transfer offer just now of 0% and £0 transfer fees for 20 months - you could pay for it on a normal credit card, transfer the balance to the Tesco one and you’ll save a heap on interest etc Smile

bilbodog · 05/04/2019 16:49

Dont ever use the large national companies - they always charge way more. Use a local firm that has been around for ages if you can find one.

scaryteacher · 05/04/2019 16:51

OP Everest are known rip offs and just want to sell. They tried to sell to us in a former house, we kept saying no, they insisted on an appointment. They phoned to confirm the appointment and we pointed out that as we had original edwardian sashes, we wouldn't be replacing them, but we had a couple of hours to waste that night, so if they wanted to come...

In the current house, a couple of blokes came knocking for one of the big companies to see if we wanted windows done. Said I had windows on order..they said with XX company (the local one)?. I nodded, and they said that everyone in the village used the local company.

WBWIFE · 05/04/2019 23:20

7k here in the south west with front and porch door plus 8 windows.

Large companies are extortionate

We had safe style round fir previous house they quoted 15k and then they dropped to 9k if we booked there and then, then we got another local window fitter round with excellent ratings and he did it for 4k!

Mosaic123 · 06/04/2019 09:03

Be careful when using a local company. We had 3 windows replaced and now we are moving the buyers want to see FENSA certificates for these windows (which are good windows). We have to pay for an indemnity policy as they might not have been installed to FENSA standards. The company we used is not FENSA registered.

However, IMHO it is all the other windows that they should be worrying about! For example the front of the house has original 1930s stained glass windows which are definitely not so great.

KirstyVal · 16/04/2019 11:36

That does sound rather steep!

I would ask around / look at the smaller companies.

The smaller companies won't have the overheads.

They are all going to offer slightly different prices anyway and you might decide one company will offer a better service and is worth the extra bob.

www.doubleglazingontheweb.co.uk - Their quoting tool is really helpful. Will give you a rough idea on price.
