Thickness of worktop issue with Gas Hob and Drawer Cabinet Underneath

Hello all
I’m planning a new kitchen and looking to incorporate a fair few drawer units. The units will be from DIY kitchens. I’m looking at slimmer 25mm laminate worktops from Egger which will hopefully give a more contemporary look. It will be a gas hob - can’t have induction due to husband’s ICD.
I’m looking at specifications for Neff gas hobs with a depth of 45mm which seem to specify a minimum worktop depth of 30mm.
As I am planning the kitchen myself I don’t want to make any silly mistakes only apparent when the kitchen is being fitted. I have emailed DIY Kitchens and their advice was to avoid slimmer worktops 😕
I see many kitchens with long drawer units under a hob such as I’m planning. Anything else will give an unbalanced look to my kitchen I think. How has everyone else dealt with this and is it an issue at all? I see lots of 20mm quartz worktops (also an option I’m looking at but may be over budget) and even 12.5mm solid laminates. Is there a solution without closing off the top drawer? I wouldn’t want to do this really as I’m planning 3 drawer units and will have more pan drawers than narrower cutlery depth ones. Also the handiness of having the utensils drawer under the hob!

Hum, difficult one. My maths is pretty good though and I have one of thier kitchens. 25mm worktop depth + 18mm top frame of the carcase = 43mm. This would have to be the height for the hob. Any bigger and the bottom of the hob would start to go into the cutlery drawer area and could cause problems. There is a [[https://advice.diy-kitchens.com/customer-questions/different-types-pan-drawers/
diagram on DIYs site]] here that shows there is also another 8mm between the top of the cutlery drawer and the bottom of the 18mm top part of the carcase. So in theory, your hob could be 51mm in height. Better check the spec of the hob online first. AO.com are pretty good at showing all the measurements.

That’s really useful, thanks so much Ramona 😄 Weird that DIYKitchens didn’t direct me to that page.
I’m also thinking that the 45mm depth of the gas hob must take into account the part that sits on top of the worktop ie it wouldn’t be completely flush which would give another few mm.
As you say I’ll have to double check dimensions of the hob before I buy.
Can I also ask which style of worktop you’ve gone for and whether you are happy with them?

We have a gas Neff Hobb in a 42mm thick worktop and the bottom is flush with the bottom of the worktop

Thanks soulrider I’ve just been looking at the Neff/Bosch/Siemens gas on glass hobs and they do seem to be pretty flush with the worktops in the images so I don’t think I can rely on any leeway there. AO show some images of the underside of a Neff gas hob and it looks to be a steel contained unit.
I think with the 25mm worktop +18mm cabinet edge + 8mm gap shown in the diagram Ramona found in the DIY Kitchens pages I am happier that it’s possible to have a cutlery drawer under a 45mm deep hob.

Does anyone know of any suppliers of 25mm worktops apart from Egger? Ideally I’d want 4 metre lengths to aboid joins.

I have gas on glass and it is s huge pain in the arse to keep clean.

HotGingerPudding2 · 05/04/2019 19:15

Urgh, is it the glass Simon? I have a stainless steel Neff gas hob installed in 2005 that I have to say is pretty immaculate. Ditto the matching double built under oven. I’ve also been reading mixed reviews about the newer style Neff built in ovens and how they are less ‘robust’. Also not keen on the new knobs! Much prefer the old elongated style.

Ours is gas on glass and I don't find it particularly difficult to keep clean, no worse than any other gas oven anyway - induction is of course easier.

soulrider · 05/04/2019 19:24

should read 'no worse than any other gas hob'

Simonfromharlow · 05/04/2019 19:26

Yes it's the glass. Always covered in dust and it's difficult to clean without leavings smears. Especially between the knobs. Kind of wish I'd got stainless now! Looks amazing though haha

HotGingerPudding2 · 05/04/2019 19:45

Thanks both.
Thinking about it the front of my current hob, where the knobs are, is glass and I do need to buff that up after wiping unlike the stainless steel that has been pretty bombproof. Agree the black glass looks good though - very streamlined.

another option is to put a 6mm board over all the base units - like an extra top to the unit in the same colour - then the 20mm worktop over it - it wont really be very visible as it will be set back from the worktop edge - have seen this done on a kitchen with 20mm glass worktop

HotGingerPudding2 · 05/04/2019 22:36

Thanks Dollydaydreamer
I’ve not yet spoken to my fitter in any detail to see whether he thinks it will be a real issue and whether it’s something he regularly encounters.

Another option that we took is to get the shark nose finish on quartz worktops which looks really thin but actually has plenty of material thickness over the main area.

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 06/04/2019 18:23

This would explain why the holiday flat I stayed in, in Switzerland, recently had the hob fitted into a wooden chopping board area . This was about 50mm thick and all the other areas except another chopping board area directly opposite the hob were really thin !
