Wooden ceiling?!

I haven't seen a ceiling like this before. How would you change it? Would you rip it all down- in which case, would it likely need replastering? Or could there be a way of painting it? It is a house I have seen on rightmove that my partner wants to arrange a viewing for.

Yes I'm afraid you have to either rip it off and plaster (possibly will need to be boarded first then skimmed over as it causes damage when you do this) or paint over with a sealant and then undercoat/gloss.

We had similar in our bathroom and dining room in our previous house, painted over looks ok if you're on a budget or for short term, plastering cost around £400 for our 2×3m bathroom in the North

I would have it removed and probably re plastered. I don't see these much in the UK, but in Ireland they crop up all too often - I just don't know what they were thinking!

CherryPavlova · 04/04/2019 06:58

It needs removing.

What the others said. However, if you wanted to buy time the whole kitchen would be totally transformed with paint , new tiles mad flooring and some different handles on the cabinets.

Actually I’d leave the tiles, paint ceiling and cupboard, new floor blinds and handles and would scrub up pretty well. Would be doable yourself but would take a fair amount of time and would be sensible to choose your equipment and paint carefully as makes a big difference.

We had ceilings like this when we moved into our house and we had a builder plasterboard over and then paint. No problem at all and less work I would think than ripping it all out.

housingcrisis · 04/04/2019 08:22

I have never seen it before... makes me feel claustrophobic! The whole house needs a fair bit of work tbh.

My builders have suggested to board over the one that I have in my bathroom.

Solasum · 04/04/2019 08:30

I think if it was painted white you wouldn’t really notice it was wood

We've got this in a bedroom. The room is massive though and the ceiling quite high (compared to the other bedrooms) so it's not so claustrophobic. We got used to it pretty quickly! Would dread to think of the damage it would cause if we tried to remove it.

BlackSatinDancer · 04/04/2019 09:04

I would remove it and have the ceiling either re-boarded and skimmed or, in the event the ceiling underneath is reasonable (if there is anything underneath) just have it skimmed.

We've just ripped out a kitchen very like this! The ceiling came down and exposed all sorts of electrical nightmares above it. Oh and found a copy of the Sunday times dating back to 1985! After all that was sorted, our builder boarded and then skimmed the ceiling. Looks great now.
