Installing large kitchen island, can’t have wood, not keen on granite/marble so considering stainless steel - worried may show marks a lot and may also be cold - island will have seating section . Anyone else have SS worktop in family kitchen?

I have stainless steel. We chose it on looks alone and I still love the way it looks. But I wouln’t do it again. It’s noisy, for one thing, and we’re open plan. Another thing-if you put a hot pan on it and then move the pan, the surface stays hot for ages. Sounds a daft reason, but it was an issue cooking with children. It’s very easy to look after, though, and lasts forever.

And I am sitting at mine now with my elbows resting on it and it’s freezing!

OP I have SS worktop & it is the second time I have had it ( had it in previous house ) I would recommend it.

  1. I would get brushed stainless steel rather than the very shiny polished one - much more forgiving of marks etc. ( First time I did it I got the very shiny one) But then one person's "marks" is another person's patina Smile
  1. Depending on temperature of kitchen I can honestly say we haven't found it to be cold & I have a tiny seating area at one end of island.
  1. So easy to maintain - I have had in previous houses wood , corian ( would never ever recommend corian based on my experience ) and granite.

4 I have an open plan kitchen / dining in a very small house but separate seating area. Noise hasn't been a problem for us. More noise from stacking the dishwasher.

Absolutely listen to @Bertrandrussell , but I have done it once before and did it again , I suspect if ever I have the will or energy to move again I would get it a third time. It it very practical and I think very attractive. The hot pan thing , I took it a different way - you can bung a hot pan down and no harm done. My worktops / island tops were too high to be a problem when DS was little and I didn't think at the time anything would be hot enough to cause a problem - but different circumstances for all , obviously.

I would recommend it @cloughie100

You can have mine for free! Large island with built in sink (mistake) bespoke water fall sides. I find it cold for entertaining and poor acoustically in a big space. It is going on a couple of weeks! We might use it as a garden kitchen. I would have SS as a worktop tho around hob and sink etc - but not as an island.

One of my mates said “two large chips and a battered sausage please” as a joke the week I put it in - hated it from that day on!

Does it not scratch?

I don't like granite or marble either - i went for quartz. Less 'swirly'.
