DIY Kitchens Paint Finish help

Hi, everyone - I need to call on your collective DIY Kitchens expertise!

Our Linwood Alabaster kitchen arrived last night. The fitters began unpacking it this morning. Immediately, they spotted what appear to be black marks in the paint on several of the doors. I've tried rubbing at them, but they don't come off. I've attached a photo as an example.

Does this look normal? Am I being too fussy? Or would you expect a better finish?

I've been looking at DIYKitchens Linwood too so I shall have to keep an eye on this thread!

I would be disappointed if my new kitchen was like this on the doors. Especially if more than one. Have you sent the picture to DIYKitchens yet to see what they say? Looks a bit like a bad paint job.

wowfudge · 02/04/2019 14:02

We have a painted DIY kitchen in alabaster - from the look of your photo those aren't dirty marks or a poor paint job, it's the grain of the wood showing through, which is to be expected.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 02/04/2019 14:42

Thanks both. Wowfudge, it's the 4 or 5 that are on the centre panel very close to the left hand 'rim' I'm bothered about. I agree it's the paint effect, I'm just not sure they're really painted well enough. But perhaps it's just me

Yes, I've sent pictures to see what they say.

That is actually a bad spray paint finish, it does happen to let some slip through QC
The wood protrusion/grain will be the same colour, not black marks
Send them in photos and ask them what has happened.
I would get them replaced

Let us know what they say. I’m going to DIY tomorrow and would be hugely put off ordering from them if they didn’t sort something like this out quickly.

Do you pay for the order before delivery or just a deposit?

wowfudge · 02/04/2019 22:02

You pay upfront. They were really good at sorting a problem we had with one unit.

averythinline · 03/04/2019 08:54

Ours were a darker colour but def didnt have marks like that.....finish was great

soakedat3 · 03/04/2019 08:56

Yes please let us know what they say as that kind of finish would make me look elsewhere.

Looking at the sample door I have, I can see the grain but it doesn't look at raggedy as your picture. We're in Scotland so it wouldn't be a short distance if things had to be re-delivered. @wowfudge, did you have to pay for delivery of replacement items?

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 03/04/2019 09:07

I'll try and get better photos tonight - most of the doors weren't very accessible yesterday. And I'll definitely report back on what they say.

No we didn't have to pay for delivery for a couple of replacement bits.

junenotoffred · 03/04/2019 09:21

I have DIY's Norton units in my kitchen so not the same but still wood-grain & finish looks nothing like that - it's perfect. In my experience their customer service was great - when I needed extra bits because I changed my mind about things during fitting they couldn't have been more helpful so fingers crossed you get the same service.

SunnyUpNorth · 03/04/2019 10:41

I’m almost at the showroom, am v excited!! Can you haggle with DIY for discounts or is the price on display the price you pay? I’m terrible at haggling but would be good to know if it’s feasible.

wowfudge · 03/04/2019 11:00

Sunny you can try. Let us know how you get on.

They're primarily an online company which is why they are so cheap to start with. I think you're on a hiding to nothing, but they'll probably tell you when their next sale is.

SunnyUpNorth · 03/04/2019 15:07

Chickened out of negotiating but did get the impression it wasn’t really a viable option unless perhaps you were getting a massive kitchen, all the appliances, worktops etc.

The showroom is AMAZING, I was so impressed. Especially with the free cake!!

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 03/04/2019 15:50

Update - very pleased with the response so far. All the doors I had reported so far are being replaced. I did tell them the ones I had reported were examples and a lot of them had issues, so I've clarified if I'll be able to get any additional ones replaced too. Still waiting to hear on that, but I am hopeful. I'll be photographing those this evening, as I should have better access tonight.

That's good news Quantum. I like to hear when companies respond well to problems! It also makes me a bit less apprehensive about ordering online. Please keep us updated :)

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 25/04/2019 16:14

Final update - I'm very happy with how this was resolved. DIY Kitchens replaced all the doors I was unhappy with with no quibbling, and the replacements are much better. The only issue is that it took ages - 3 weeks from reporting for the replacements to arrive. However - despite the delay, they fixed it and I'm very happy. The finished kitchen looks fantastic!

That's good to know Quantum. Thanks for updating. Good post sales is really important when buying online!

ImTheRealHFella · 25/04/2019 16:20

We had a mistake on our order (our fault) and they made and sent correct unit very fast.

Can't fault DIY kitchens. They've been super and ours is beautiful.

IncrediblySadToo · 28/04/2019 15:14

That’s great!

I mean, obviously it should have been picked up at QC, but no quibbling etc is great.

I’m still trying to find exactly what I want, but DIY is on my list of possible suppliers.

ANYONE want to post photos of their lovely kitchens?....
