Bits in hot water

Just ran a bath and noticed it filled with yellow brown flakes. Looked like scale but was soft and if rubbed between fingers disappeared... anyone had similar?
Checked kitchen hot tap too and it came out of there.
After running for 2 minutes it was clear again

Have you got a hot-water cylinder? What colour?

Have you got a loft tank? if so, go up with a totch and inspect for loose insulation or decaying wildlife. In this case I suggest not using water from the hot taps until problem resolved.

Put your thumb over the spout of the bathroom cold tap and turn it on. Can you stop the flow? If yes, I suggest not using water from the cold bathroom taps until resolved.

Examine the water from the kitchen cold tap. I expect it will be OK.

You haven't got a shattaff, have you?

Light blue water cylinder
Cant get up in the loft right now... will do tommorrow
The problem is only with the hot tap
Cold tap pressure in the bath is not unstoppable with finger

What's the water like from the kitchen COLD tap? This will prove whether it's an internal problem or a mains problem.
Most likely explanation is sediment that normally lies dormant in the bottom of the water mains but can get stirred up if the supply is shut off, re-routed from another source or if local fire hydrants or sluice valves are opened up by the fire services or water company respectively.

All cold taps are fine. Checked all bathrooms and kitchen
Just hot taps

A light blue cylinder is fed from a cold water tank (cistern) usually in the loft or above the cylinder.

The contaminant most likely comes from there.

If it can be dispersed by rubbing in the fingers it is probably not the remains of a perished washer. It might be rust but depending on the age and material of the tank this is now unlikely, unless it has come from the radiator water (which would mean a piping error)

It can be from a decomposing pigeon or squirrel, or a piece of cardboard or wood. The tank should have a tight-fitting plastic lid to prevent anything getting in.

Sounds like limescale we get in our hot water tank. Are you in a hard water area?

Alexalee · 02/04/2019 00:00

Very hard. But timescale is usually brittle not slimy
